Cosatu congress collapse blamed on political gridlock
The First Deputy President of COSATU, Mike Shingange, might be correct in this video clip, asserting that "from where I stand, there is a government of an elite pact, what they call as the Government of National Unity”. Emphatically, he concludes “That thing there is an elite pact". Ironically, the continued weakening of the glorious federation of the workers, COSATU, into a laughing stock is due to the evolution of union leaders into political elites.
Mineral beneficiation tackles poverty
The Northern Cape holds some of the richest and largest operating mines in South Africa and mining contributes 19% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the province. It has the best ore deposits in the country, such as iron ore, manganese, copper, lead, zinc and many other base metals. Government turns March and March protests into policy pressure
It is essential to acknowledge the politically astute and proactive manner in which the national government responded to the 30 June ultimatum for undocumented migrants to leave. What the government did was to reframe the protests of the March and March movement into a vital grievance mechanism, rather than a challenge to the legitimacy of the state.

ZAMANI SAUL: Is 30 years enough to remove the impact of apartheid colonialism?
In the course of the past few years, I have undertaken three long visits to China. All the trips were part of the exchange programme between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). During these visits, the Chinese maintained the narrative that it will take them a hundred years to moderately eradicate the social, political, and economic impact of the Century of Shame.

ZAMANI SAUL: Africa is little more than a pawn in the shifting world order
This year has been punctuated by global events that are key in understanding the shifting world order, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict that started in 2022 and dragged on into 2023. We all know by now that the West mobilised in support of Ukraine, which it considers an innocent victim of crude Russian aggression. On the other hand, the Global South in particular looks at Russia’s act as a challenge to the post-World War 2 order.

ZAMANI SAUL: 2022 is a year to reach out and rebuild the ANC
ZAMANI SAUL: 2022 is a year to reach out and rebuild the ANC OPINION Over the past few weeks after the 2021 local government elections, I have had an opportunity to read 11 articles giving various perspectives on the electoral performance of the African National Congress (ANC) and possible causes thereof.
Better management of internal dynamics is key to the ANC’s recovery
The 2021 local government elections are a clear demonstration of the failure to manage internal disagreements, where many of the parties, civic movements and independent candidates that contested these local government elections are direct offshoots of the ANC. (Delwyn Verasamy/M&G) Over the past few weeks after the 2021 local government elections, I have had an opportunity to read 11 articles giving various perspectives on the electoral performance of the ANC and possible causes thereof.
ZAMANI SAUL: The ANC’s RET grouping is a precursor to a new party
ZAMANI SAUL: The ANC’s RET grouping is a precursor to a new party opinion There is a solemn declaration in the ANC constitution which requires that all members must “defend the unity and integrity of the Organisation and its principles, and combat any tendency towards disruption and factionalism”. This in articulation affirms the commitment of the ANC to organisational unity as the principal value that must be defended at all times.

Zamani Saul: Crude bravado will capsize ANC renewal
Since the ANC's December conference I heard the secretary general (SG) mentioning several times that he is not a coward. The last instances were during the SABC interview and when he addressed mourners at a funeral service in the Free State. He made the same assertion a number of times in national executive committee (NEC) meetings as the Free State provincial chairperson. To me, not to be a coward simply means that the SG is a brave man, a very brave man.
Ramaphosa needs grit to midwife ANC rebirth
When the Rev ZR Mahabane was elected ANC president in 1937, he took over from Pixley ka Isaka Seme, whose leadership antics had completely paralysed the organisation and robbed it of its strategic vision. In the 106 years of its existence, no ANC president inherited the organisation in a worse state than Mahabane. How he dealt with it will provide beneficial lessons to newly elected ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa.
Op-Ed: Ramaphosa is next in line to be ANC president, but he will have to fight the Gupta virus for it
Cyril Ramaphosa, as deputy president of the ANC, is next in line to become party leader. But the tradition of ensuring smooth transition of leadership in the ANC has been erased in the minds of those infected by the Gupta virus. So comrade Ramaphosa, if you want to be the president of the ANC, you must be prepared to fight for it, writes ANC Northern Cape chairperson ZAMANI SAUL.
History can help ANC
However, the fractious NEC invoked doubts among ANC members and their supporters about its sincerity in accepting collective blame. Worse, the saga of the imminent arrest of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and the early conference proposal by the ANC Youth League drowned the statement.
