Modulation of intra-oceanic trench bending and along-trench thermochemical transport by mantle toroidal flow
Abstract Oceanic trench bending over 1000 km occurs globally, with notable along-trench variations in mantle wedge thermochemistry. However, the mechanisms influencing both shallow trench geometry and deep mantle state remain unclear. Here we focus on the Mariana Trench as a representative case. Our 3D model successfully replicates its curved geometry.
Deep mantle plume origin of oceanic intraplate volcanism
Abstract Volcanism far from tectonic plate margins provides important insights into the dynamic evolution of Earth’s interior. On oceanic plates, an age-progressive volcanic seamount chain is generally attributed to the plate moving over a mantle plume. However, many seamounts are spatially scattered without clear age progression, so their relationship to deep mantle processes has been contentious.
Channelized lithospheric erosion shapes the western North American craton margin
Abstract Modification of craton margins influences topographic evolution, magmatism, and mineralization, though the scales, geometries, and driving mechanisms remain debated. Previous studies of the western North American craton margin focused primarily on the Colorado Plateau, invoking hydration by the subducting slab as the controlling factor. Here we construct a high-resolution 3-D shear-wave velocity model of this margin using full-wave ambient noise tomography.
Lens effect of remnant blocks on deep mantle upwelling causing anomalous subsidence - Nature Communications
Abstract Classical mantle convection models predict a broad surface uplift over a lower mantle upwelling. However, recent studies have identified anomalously localized surface subsidence above seismically imaged lower mantle upwellings, particularly in regions where upwellings are impeded by subducted/delaminated blocks not currently connected to a subducting/delaminating lithosphere (‘remnant blocks’ for simplicity), e.g., in the western USA and the South China Sea.

The role of plume-lithosphere interaction in Hawaii-Emperor chain formation - Nature Communications
Abstract Paleolatitudes of volcanic rocks reveal that prominent changes in volcanic trend of the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot chain represent meridional migration of the magma source. However, models assuming latitudinal plume migration fail to explain the observed age distribution, rock composition, and erratic paleolatitude changes of the oldest Emperor seamounts.
Western US intraplate deformation controlled by the complex lithospheric structure - Nature Communications
Abstract The western United States is one of Earth’s most tectonically active regions, characterized by extensive crustal deformation through intraplate earthquakes and geodetic motion. Such intracontinental deformation is usually ascribed to plate boundary forces, lithospheric body forces, and/or viscous drag from mantle flow.
Secular craton evolution due to cyclic deformation of underlying dense mantle lithosphere - Nature Geoscience
Abstract The cratonic crust is the most long-lived tectonic unit on Earth. The longevity of Earth’s cratonic crust has been attributed to neutrally buoyant and mechanically strong lithospheric keels. However, this is inconsistent with observed secular cratonic deformation and alteration.
