Crop Progress and Condition for the Week Ending August 26, 2018. Nathan Eason, White County The grape harvest began. Corn continued to be harvested for silage. Most hay producers took advantage of the week’s dry weather and made their last cutting of the season. Brent Allen, Washington County The corn harvest was progressing quickly. Dry conditions have affected all crops. Grass has almost stopped growing. Dryland cotton and soybeans began dropping bolls and pods.

Janice Nicholson – Rutherford County FSA The warm temperatures and ample rain have made for a bumper crop of all the commodities this summer. Pastures and hayfields are approaching fall in great shape. Mac Malloy – Robeson County Extension Corn harvest continues with yields being reported as above average for most areas. Soybeans and cotton are looking good. Tobacco growers are rushing to get the crop out of the field.

Measurable rainfall again crisscrossed the region late last week and last weekend dropping moisture for most of us. The latest rounds did not have any damaging weather with them that I am aware of like some swaths of previous rounds did. With extended cool periods of last season and the resulting quality cotton fiber problems (aided by a late and rough start) fresh in our minds, a few days brought on concerns for our cotton quality to the surface.
