Six voices on how to fight propaganda
Graphic by Aleksandar Savic With the great powers facing off and a global authoritarian slide, we are entering a new era of brazen propaganda. Dissidents already living under totalitarian regimes are reaching out to those who feel their democracy is under threat. We hear from six of these champions of free thought on how to fight back and protect the truth.
Beyond the Political Noise: How Migrants Are Used as Scapegoats for the Real Crisis
Current time: 0:00 / Total time: -28:01 Audio playback is not supported on your browser. Please upgrade. Is the immigration debate really about borders — or is it a political smokescreen? In this episode, we unpack how migrants are often turned into political scapegoats to redirect public anger away from the real causes of public frustration —rising inequality, underfunded public services, unemployment, and the soaring cost of living.
Labour’s Vile Appeasement of the Anti-Migrant Right Won’t Even ‘Work’
The cycle of more and more extreme anti-migrant policies and outright racist statements from UK politicians has become so familiar that much of it barely registers. This week, however, the Labour Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has pulled off something impressive: policy announcements so disgusting as to produce real shock across her jaded party – and the country.

Living together (and apart) on the move: new directions in everyday multiculturalism
ABSTRACT This paper advances research on everyday multiculturalism in three key ways. Firstly, it puts into practice convivial disintegration, which challenges expectations of integration in all sorts of ways, highlighting how lives are lived on the move even though immigration legislation and social cohesion agendas suggest otherwise.
Chiral Lemniscate Formation in Magnetic Field Controlled Topological Fluid Flows
1 Introduction Selective formation of chiral nanomaterials has emerging technological prospects with the chiral induction imparted by circularly polarised light.[1-9] An alternative approach for chiral induction in the absence of chiral auxiliary agents is to use chiral fluid flow.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Yvette Cooper's Post-Rwanda Immigration Plans
Subscribe to our newsletter for exclusive editorial emails from the Byline Times Team. In the wake of the Labour Government’s first King’s Speech and the new Home Secretary Yvette Cooper’s first statement to Parliament, we are beginning to get some real detail on their immediate priorities for changing the asylum and immigration system in the UK. The picture so far is mixed, with some welcome decisions and some concerning signals already coming out of Government. Here’s what we’ve learned so far.

Labour’s Migration Plans Will Embolden the Far Right
Labour’s manifesto launch last week was billed as deliberately boring. We were warned there would be no new policies and no surprises and indeed there weren’t, as the party attempts to project stability and serious politics over gimmicks. But when so much of our society is in crisis, is such caution really credible? On migration the document is more defined by what isn’t said than by what is.
The Truth About Immigration That Sunak and Starmer Aren't Willing to Tell you About
Subscribe to our newsletter for exclusive editorial emails from the Byline Times Team. Like some grisly ghost of Brexit past, Nigel Farage’s net-zero immigration pledge hovered all over last night’s election debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer. Like the Reform Party leader, both major parties have promised to reduce net immigration, but unlike him, neither have tried to pluck out a number for exactly by how much.
This may be the 'immigration election' to politicians but it's not to the public

Think Change episode 35: is the international community failing on its shared commitment to refugees?
The rights and treatment of refugees is never far from the media headlines. Hostile narratives and politicised rhetoric dominate the news at a time when globally, solidarity for refugees continues to decline. But with devastating conflict and climate hazards forcing more and more people from their homes, is the international community failing on its shared commitment to refugees?
An urgent call to action
Gaia Vince’s Nomad Century is a fascinating book with a powerful core message that needs to be painted on banners, shouted from rooftops, and dragged across the sky behind (electric!) planes: migration is not a problem to be solved. It is a reality that we must manage. Migration is our most successful survival behaviour as a species, and in the face of a warming planet, it is guaranteed to become more necessary for more people.
High Shear Thin Film Synthesis of Partially Oxidized Gallium and Indium Composite 2D Sheets
1 Introduction Demand for the synthesis of 2D nanomaterials relates to striving for improved efficiency and reduced size electronics. Applications for such 2D nanomaterials are diverse, primarily in optoelectronics, energy harvesting, and storage,[1-3] and hydrogen generation.[4] Ubiquitous 2D-graphene exhibits extraordinary properties for wide-ranging applications; however, its zero-bandgap limits its use, particularly in electronics.
Citizenship Deprivation on Apple Podcasts
As the controversial Nationality and Borders Bill works its way through parliament in the UK, we investigate Clause 9 which focuses on citizenship deprivation and the rights of the Home Secretary to take somebody's citizenship away. Joined by Zoe Gardner, and Abhishek Sahar, we ask who is a citizen, and how can citizenship be taken away? We also look beyond the UK to the story of Assam, in India and how the National Register of Citizens has played out there.
Opinion | Everyone loses when nations forcefully limit global migration
This story originally appeared in openDemocracy on Jan. 31, 2022. It is shared here with permission under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. Free movement is seen as an unworkable position—but it is our current immigration system, both in the UK and globally, that is unworkable. It is barbaric, it produces exploitation and, with the rising threat of the climate crisis, it is unsustainable.
The UK Border Regime Extends a Whole Lot Further Than France
From Priti Patel’s wave machines to the navy pushing back boats across the Channel, when it comes to immigration, the UK’s border with France tends to be the focus of both politicians and the press. Such attention, however, misses a huge part of the picture. The UK’s brutal immigration policy extends much further than our own borders – from military support at the Polish border to funding detention centres in Africa.
Priti Patel Is Right About One Thing: Our Asylum System Is Fundamentally Broken
The 27 people who died trying to cross the Channel last night offer more tragic proof of the violence and untenability of the UK’s border regime. True to form, home secretary Priti Patel used the grimly predictable tragedy as an opportunity to double down on the government’s harsh new immigration plans. May you never know a second of peace in this life.

Punishing migrants: Stubborn Home Office covid response puts everyone at risk
Thursday, 9 April 2020 8:11 AM By Zoe Gardner This crisis has turned many long-standing assumptions about who we value on their head. Yesterday, MPs from across parties called for migrant workers in the NHS to be granted indefinite leave to remain. Even Piers Morgan has started championing the migrants on whom the country's health and wellbeing relies.
Europe must share responsibility for the Greece migrant crisis
The situation at the Greek-Turkish land and sea borders has erupted into nightmare images and reports again this week, with the Greek military being deployed to violently repel refugees. Europe’s response shows how voices of practical common sense and humanity have lost ground even since the failed response to the 2015 “refugee crisis”.
JCWI: how we beat the hostile environment in court
Today, the High Court has ruled that the ‘Right to Rent’ checks, a key policy of Theresa May’s so-called “hostile”, now rebranded as “compliant environment”, cause landlords to discriminate against prospective tenants on racial and nationality grounds. Mr Justice Martin Spencer has handed down a damning verdict excoriating the government, saying that the scheme not merely risks causing illegal discrimination, but is certain to do so, as would any scheme of this kind.
Complementary, Holistic, and Integrative Medicine: Advice for Clinicians on Herbs and Breastfeeding
In the United States, herbal products are classified as dietary supplements, a regulatory category created with the introduction of the Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act (DSHEA). (1) Under this act, dietary supplements are defined as herbs or other botanicals, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and certain other natural substances. Under DSHEA, herbal medicines are held to different regulatory standards than prescription medications in testing and marketing.
Theresa May’s ‘hostile environment’ for migrants endangers victims of trafficking.
Theresa May has made tackling ‘modern slavery’ one of her major policy priorities, with the Modern Slavery Act of 2015 trumpeted as a victory for anti-trafficking and human rights campaigners. But in fact she has worsened conditions for more and more victims of trafficking, forcing them deeper into a web of exploitation and abuse.
May is all soundbite and no substance on immigration
Comment: The upcoming UK election and Brexit negotiations are an opportunity to drastically change our broken immigration system, for an approach that is evidence-based, compassionate and optimistic, writes Zoe Gardner. In the run up to the UK election on 8 June, the Conservative manifesto makes much of the government's pledge to drastically cut net immigration to the UK to under 100,000.

For Freedom of Movement
Freedom of movement gives every one of us the opportunity to travel, work and build lives in other countries. The rich have always had the possibility of migration, Freedom of Movement opens those doors to all of us. All of our wages and working conditions should be guaranteed by MPs, no matter where we come from. Meanwhile, we recognise that the people who have come from all over Europe to make the UK their home have enriched our country in every sense.

World Refugee Day - the buck must stop here
Comment: Zoe Gardner of Asylum Aid UK, says that we stand at a key moment in history. It is time to stop passing the buck and rise to the challenge. The purpose of any charity must be, fundamentally, to render itself obsolete. Everybody working at Asylum Aid and in the refugee sector looks forward to a time when there are no more people forced to flee their countries and seek protection abroad.
The myths that are preventing us from solving the refugee crisis
The preventable deaths of another 400 people in the Mediterranean on Monday morning must be a wake-up call. The British and European approach to the migrant and refugee humanitarian crisis simply isn't working.
Women seeking asylum: closing the protection gap
Globally the British government is pushing for better protections for women, yet the same protections are unavailable to those seeking asylum. Asylum Aid is asking why a quarter of women’s claims are overturned on appeal. Mariam has always been outspoken, an agitator, a nuisance, she says. Even now she speaks vigorously in sudden bursts of words, like somebody worried they won’t be given the chance to finish their point.
Comment:The Foreign Office pledges to help women
Angelina Jolie and William Hague's efforts to battle violence against women have been met with great fanfare. The celebrity odd couple have demanded greater protections for women from sexual violence - like the chance to speak to trained, female interviewers and interpreters about their ordeal ahead of male officials. When the Foreign Office makes these grand statements, women like Zara (not her real name) listen in surprise.
