The Lewiston Tribune — On Saturday, the Vandals fell 30-22 to Albany in the quarterfinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. As soon as the dust began to settle on one of the best seasons in program history for Idaho, three first-team All-Big Sky players announced their intentions of entering the transfer portal on Monday. Sophomore running back Anthony Woods, junior defensive back Marcus Harris and sophomore quarterback Gevani McCoy will all be searching for new destinations to continue their careers. The Lewiston Tribune — MOSCOW — The fourth-seeded Idaho football team’s storybook season came to an end with a 30-22 loss to Albany in the quarterfinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs on Saturday at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome. Great Danes sophomore quarterback, Reese Poffenbarger, threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Brevin Easton with 4:38 remaining in regulation for their first lead of the game. On the Vandals’ ensuing drive, Albany’s sack leader, Anton Juncaj, notched his 14th QB takedown of the year and knocked the ball loose. From there, freshman running back Griffin Woddell added salt to the wound with a 29-yard rushing TD to put Albany in front 30-19 with 46 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Lewiston Tribune — The Kendrick High School football team has been the model of consistency over the past three years. The Tigers have won 25 straight games dating back to the 21-22 season and have collected three consecutive Idaho Class 1A Division II state titles. Most recently, Kendrick downed Camas County 68-0 in the 1A DII championship on Nov. 16. The Tigers’ shutout victory over the Mushers capped off a six-game stretch where they outscored their opponents 470-32, all while becoming the No. 1 ranked 8-man squad in the country, according to MaxPreps. Most of Kendrick’s coaching staff has been together since the beginning. But at the start of the season, an addition was made — nothing too crazy, just an unpaid assistant. However, this wasn’t just some ordinary Kendrick resident; this was Idaho football legend Ken Hobart.

Parson pioneers passionate grappling journey

The Lewiston Tribune — Bryce Parson, a former Lewiston High School wrestling standout, spent his holiday across the blue bridge in Clarkston helping out the Bantams. The four-time Idaho Class 5A state wrestling finalist and two-time champion has spent the majority of his time developing the next generation of grapplers since graduating from LHS in 2015. On Aug. 11, Parson accepted an assistant coaching job at his alma mater, North Idaho College — a position he had a hard time coming to grips with originally. “I didn’t know if I deserved to coach at the college level,” Parson said. “I didn’t know if I could do it, so I let my body take over. My body knows more than my brain does in the sense of coaching and belonging at that level.”

The Lewiston Tribune — MOSCOW - The No. 6 Idaho football team played its best game of the year against in-state and Big Sky Conference rival Idaho State on Saturday at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome. By halftime, the Vandals had outgained the Bengals by more than 350 yards, had four takeaways, scored 56 points, a program record, and got a legendary performance from backup quarterback Jack Layne. Layne, who played in relief of an injured Gevani McCoy, finished the first half 18-of-23 passing (78.3%) for 264 yards and six touchdowns, which tied a program record for the most TD passes in a single game. By game’s end, Layne, a redshirt freshman, was 20-of-26 passing for 275 yards as he led the Vandals to a 63-21 decision over the Bengals.

The Lewiston Tribune — Let’s go ahead and call a spade a spade — the No. 10 Idaho football team was out-physicaled, outcoached and simply outplayed during its 23-21 loss to No. 9 Montana on Saturday at a sold-out P1FCU Kibbie Dome. Did the Vandals have an opportunity to come back and possibly win late in the game? Sure. But it wasn’t enough. Coach Bobby Hauck and the Grizzlies were playing not to lose in the second half, and thanks to some self-inflicted wounds from Idaho, it worked. Montana had a 20-7 halftime lead, was 7-of-9 on third downs and was outgaining the Vandals by more than 120 yards on offense.

The Lewiston Tribune — There's no reason to overreact following the No. 7 Idaho football team's 31-17 loss to the Pac-12's California. The Vandals handled the Golden Bears for the better part of 20 minutes before the larger, more physical Bears came back and scored 31 unanswered points while generating three takeaways. This is the third time in Idaho’s last four Football Bowl Subdivision matchups that it had a lead or was tied at halftime and still lost. In all three defeats, the Vandals played well enough to win but ended up getting worn out by the bigger bodies, which forced them into mistakes. And while there’s no reason Idaho should hit the panic button, it needs to iron out the kinks quickly because its conference and home opener against No. 4 Sacramento State won’t be a walk in the park.

Idaho’s Jermaine Jackson and Hayden Hatten are now clear of their negative recruiting marks following an electric 2022 season in which they both had over 1,000 receiving yards. Coming off such a season in today’s college football landscape with the transfer portal and players having an opportunity to profit off of their name, image and likeness, Hatten and Jackson could’ve looked to play elsewhere. But neither Jackson nor Hatten have forgotten how things started out for them.

The Lewiston Tribune — Pullman High School graduate and former University of Utah track standout Lauren McCluskey didn't deserve to have her story end the way it did. deserve to have her story end the way it did. McCluskey was murdered on Oct. 22, 2018, by a man she briefly dated. Her situation could’ve been prevented and could be summed up as a series of mishandlings by the University of Utah and the justice system. ESPN released a 90-minute documentary titled ‘LISTEN’ telling McCluskey’s story, which debuted Tuesday. The documentary includes never-before-seen footage and interviews with those connected to the case, including family members. The doc is hosted by ESPNs TJ Quinn and Nicole Noren.

The current Wildcats compiled 62 straight victories from February 2021 through Friday’s 64-43 decision against Castleford in the semifinal round of the Idaho Class 1A Division I state tournament. The streak came to an abrupt end Saturday in heartbreaking fashion, an 81-79 overtime loss to Lakeside of Plummer in the championship game Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

A new rivalry is formed: Young Asotin and Lapwai wrestling teams show strength

The Lewiston Tribune — A new area rivalry may have formed on Thursday when the Asotin wrestling team hosted Lapwai in its first-ever home dual. The Panthers and Wildcats are both in their infancy as wrestling programs, being their first and second years, respectively. So with a lack of numbers in certain weight classes, no team score was kept throughout the event. Asotin won the majority of the matches 8-4, but the highlight of the night was the atmosphere and raucous crowd, which were on par with any grappling rivalry in the region.
