Westminster's tortuous battle with the gender question
What is a woman? In recent years it is a question that has caused political punch-ups, party splits and despatch box spats. A complex, emotionally charged and fiercely contested argument around gender, trans rights and women's sex-based rights has often left politicians at Westminster floundering to answer a seemingly straightforward question. Today's Supreme Court ruling may, just may, calm a political row that has produced all sorts of verbal contortions, particularly from Sir Keir Starmer.
In defence of our journalists
Over the last few months Bristol24/7 journalists and readers who have submitted opinion pieces on our site have been abused and harassed across online channels and on the streets of Bristol to a level that no-one should have to endure and that we cannot ignore. Effectively recruiting from diverse communities is a challenge for a lot of media outlets, however Bristol24/7 has made significant progress in the last few years. We now have a diverse core editorial team.

Government to implement university free speech law
The government is expected to reactivate a piece of legislation aimed at protecting free speech on university campuses. The Higher Education Freedom of Speech Act, which could have seen universities fined for failing to uphold freedom of speech, was passed under the previous, Conservative government in 2023. But its implementation was stopped shortly after Labour's election win last summer over concerns the law was potentially damaging to student welfare.

Will Rachel Reeves' difficult week cause her lasting damage?
Politics is often reduced to a story of who's up and who's down. I am, personally, sceptical of the idea of politics being a horse race - I've read too many confident predictions about the state of it that proved to be a nonsense. But politicians specialise in storytelling - and Westminster would be much duller without it. So with those caveats, let's consider the question that prompted this piece: just how bad has this week been for Chancellor Rachel Reeves?
Inside the crazy race to stop cow farts and save the world
Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, amateur space explorer and one of the richest people on the planet, has joined the race to stop cows farting – and save the planet. The $10 billion Bezos Earth Fund, which funds research into tackling climate change, has donated $9.4 million to a project at the Pirbright Institute in Surrey, which is trying to develop a vaccine that will reduce the amount of methane-producing microbes in the stomachs of cows.

Why the shaken baby controversy is now stalking death row
Robert Roberson should have died two weeks ago. He was scheduled to be executed on October 17 for murdering his two-year-old daughter Nikki in 2002 – the day before, the Texas Board of Parole had unanimously voted against recommending clemency. But following a dramatic last minute intervention the execution was put on hold.

Nashville SC’s 2024 season ended disappointingly. The club missed the postseason for the first time in their history, capping off a year in which Gary Smith was fired and the team won just 13 of 40 matches in all competitions. The roster needs a significant overhaul, but with just four players on the senior roster out of contract at the end of the season, and several players tied down to long-term, high-value contracts, Nashville have little flexibility, at least initially.

‘A very nice life for a lot less money’: why young people are fleeing high-tax Britain
That is dire news for economies. There will be fewer workers, fewer consumers and fewer taxpayers supporting a growing population of pensioners. James Pomeroy, economist at HSBC, says there are three options to fix the crunch. “The “popular” option is policies to lift birth rates, but across the world, these have largely been shown to be ineffective,” he says. Then there is fixing the public finances to ease the strain – higher taxes, higher pension ages and spending cuts, which are unpopular.

The myth of plastic recycling is finally unravelling
Consumers want something to be done about plastic pollution. Recycling is something. Therefore oil companies, manufacturers and retailers are doing it. The trouble is, many of these initiatives are muddle-headed, some fall way short of their promise and others are actively causing more environmental damage than they are preventing. Tesco’s recent travails are a case in point.

Nashville SC’s playoffs hopes were dealt a major blow, falling 1-0 to New England Revolution on a frustrating night at Gillette Stadium. The Coyotes are now in 13th place in the Eastern Conference, four points out of a playoff spot with just three matches left to play. Reeves is desperately trying to pull the fuse out of her own petard
The received wisdom seems to have coalesced around a belief that Rishi Sunak suffered from a premature election. Had he been able to hold on a little longer, the UK’s brightening economic prospects, along with falling levels of net immigration, would have resulted in, if not a win, at least a slightly less severe drubbing. Well, maybe.
Spotted dick to jambalaya: Terry's 50 years of feeding MPs
Terry Wiggins, a chef who leads the catering team at Westminster's Portcullis House, is retiring this month after 50 years. He reckons he has served 13 prime ministers in that time and is still dreaming up new recipes. “Can I have more pork please?” Terry bellows in the direction of the kitchen. Under the heat lamps of the serving counter his team of chefs are busy carving a chunk of crispy pork belly, plating haddock fishcakes and replenishing huge bowls of new potatoes and roasted carrots.

The union leaders about to ruin your life
The Government’s decision to agree pay deals with junior doctors, teachers and – most controversially – train drivers in very short order after the election has revived fears of Labour politicians caving into the unions and sending the UK back to the 1970s. It hardly helped that the deal with Aslef was quickly followed by the union announcing 22 days of strikes on LNER trains later this year.

Tories must win back Reform UK voters - Braverman
Potential Tory leadership contender Suella Braverman has said her party must win back Reform UK voters if it is to recover from its crushing election defeat. The former home secretary, tipped to run in the contest to replace Rishi Sunak, said Nigel Farage's party posed an "existential threat" to the Tories. Warning that her party no longer had the "luxury of a monopoly" over right-wing voters, she added it needed to do more focus on “core Conservative policies”.
