Letter: Leave the immigrants alone
A Sept. 30 letter to the editor (“Upset with lack of information) perfectly mirrors Donald Trump's frantic rhetoric targeting foreign-born residents. The letter writer demands to know how many "foreigners" are here, what they cost, and why he wasn’t personally consulted. My question is: why is the letter writer here? Countless foreign-born residents and citizens pay taxes that fund the very public systems and pensions native-born citizens rely on.
Letter: Our republic is limping along
At long last, a response arrived ("Banning candidates not the answer," Sept. 16). Yet, I still can’t tell if the letter writer is a loyal member of the MAGA congregation or an old-fashioned soul who still cherishes freedom from tyranny and fair voting rights for all — concepts clearly not on the MAGA agenda. Apparently, those foundational concepts of liberty aren't shared by the current management in Washington.
Letter: Judgment coming for all of us
Every human being will, at some point, arrive at the final station and stand before the gate we all must pass through. Throughout life's journey, some try to prolong the inevitable — playing chess with the Grim Reaper. But the ultimate Gatekeeper is unyielding. He already knows who we are and what we carry in our hearts; no amount of wealth can buy passage here.
Letter: Demand answers from GOP candidates
"Don't go there." I've heard this expression many times from politically like-minded souls. A friend explained it: they're too ashamed to talk about the destruction of their country. Shame and inactivity don't solve any problem, nor voting alone. When we have car problems, we take our car to a mechanic; a toothache we go to a dentist; and when ill to a doctor.
Letter: It's time to fight back
Welcomed to America, where the rule of law is a fairytale we tell children before they watch a convicted felon rewrite voting rights. Why let citizens vote when the Organizer-in-Chief can just filter out anyone with too much melanin? Mentioning our system at dinner parties invites the same horrified silence as admitting you eat drywall. I used to think my neighbors were cowards.
Letter: Trump supporters continue to fall in line
We live in an age of singular miracles, chief among them the spectacle of our grandest national scoundrel presiding over The House of Loyalty β that grand temple where American democracy goes to kneel. There he sits in his Golden Sandbox, issuing decrees to the living and the dead with all the solemn majesty of the Almighty, though executed with the finer, more practical grace of a New York gang boss.
Letter: The hypocrisy of selective justice
The double standards embedded in our modern political and legal systems have reached a tipping point, forcing us to ask a fundamental question about accountability: how do we weigh political missteps against historic lawbreaking? Consider the stark contrast in how our society views Dr. Anthony Fauci, 85, and President Donald Trump, 80.
Letter: Free to stay, free to complain
Is it freedom "to," or freedom "from" that we're actually looking for? I often wonder what people mean by the "Freedom" blasted across their T-shirts, hats, and bumper stickers. Come November, is it the “liberty” of Iran, North Korea, or Russia they are actually rooting for? During the last election, plenty of "freedom-loving" Red Hats openly cheered for Russia over American democracy. The borders are open for departure, yet strangely, none of them pack their bags. Why stay?
Letter: The cardboard carnivals and our broken math
The political circus has rolled into town, and our streets are plagued by a colorful eruption of nonsense yard signs. One wonders if these glossy rectangles actually outnumber the flesh-and-blood voters who bother to return their ballots. In local contests, a meager 5% to 20% of the populace usually manages to cast their votes.
Letter: Free lunch isn't free for everyone
Yes, there is such a thing as a "free lunch," but it's reserved for those who can afford it. In the movie "Victor/Victoria," a starving Julie Andrews faints while watching a man devour a pastry in the most grotesque way from outside a restaurant window. In his book "Free Lunch," David Cay Johnston describes how the wealthiest Americans enrich themselves at government expense, leaving us the bill.
Letter: The United States of Oligarchy
The Fourth of July is traditionally celebrated as a triumph of liberty over King George III. Yet, historical reality tells a darker story. The events of 1776 were effectively an insurrection by the colonial oligarchy, driven primarily by a desire to evade British taxation. Then, as now, powerful elite held absolute control, while the vast majority lacked true representation.
Letter: Trump the ultimate specimen
The mainstream media is panicking about Donald Trump’s health, willfully ignoring a flawless diagnosis from his top medical team: Donald Trump looking into a gold-plated mirror.
Letter: The 2026 bingo card from hell
Welcome to June 2026, where the "New Normal" is a fever dream. If you’re picking a topic for your daily outrage, good luck. We’re playing a high-stakes game of Apocalypse Bingo, and everyone is losing. Square One: The Bully’s Lament. We’re watching a "Free World Leader" act like a landlord shocked that the tenant he’s illegally evicting with missiles actually changed the locks. Trump’s war with Iran isn't strategy; it’s ego.

Why break into a house when you can just sue the entire neighborhood? Unlock the rest of the article with a subscription.
Letter: Jurassic politics and the case for actual evolution
"To everything there is a season," promises Ecclesiastes. Apparently, that included a 165-million-year season of giant lizards; right up until a cosmic boulder rudely canceled their lease. Looking at our world today, you have to wonder: Did humanity actually evolve, or did we just shrink and buy pants? Sure, we traded scaly tails for Smartphones, but things are still run by dinosaurs.
Letter: The art of the infinite stall
If you feel like the current negotiations with Iran are going in circles, you aren’t imagining it. President Trump recently announced a peace deal is "largely negotiated," only to immediately warn his team "not to rush." It’s a classic performance of Zeno’s Paradox. In logic, this paradox describes a runner who gets halfway to the finish line, then halfway again, and again, forever. Mathematically, they get infinitely close to the goal but never actually touch it.
Letter: True representation is lacking
As the Fourth of July approaches, we are conditioned to celebrate a simplified version of 1776. But a closer look at history reveals a different reality: our nation was founded largely by affluent landowners protesting British taxation. While they championed liberty, the vast majority of the colonial population — including indentured servants, women and enslaved people — remained entirely without a political voice or voting rights.
Letter: Oddly enough, Trump still with appeal
In my opinion, Trump's polling numbers should be lower than they are. But as I wrote in my previous letter, rebels and outlaws have a sexy appeal to many. Really? What's sexy about a convicted gangster, fascist, sex offender, traitor and blasphemer in the White House, who calls for the arrest of others, when he's the one who should be locked up?
Letter: A nightmare with no ending
When, if ever, will this recurring nightmare stop? Every day, is another day of political PTSD from which no treatment seems to work. The patient runs berserk at will and the doctors are in hiding. Many of us are wondering why Congress isn't doing anything to stop him? They have the power to but aren't willing to risk their own and their families' lives to put the sicko in a straight jacket.
Letter: Writer has it all wrong
Could the letter writer of "Children victims of indoctrination" (Feb. 14), please show which school or schools, or if it’s the public school system in general that promotes Marxist indoctrination? Please be specific, where in the curriculum are students taught Marxism? How can we otherwise remove it and what should replace it, perhaps with prayers and Trump's "little red book" (Project 2025)? Enough of this nonsense.
Letter: Nothing good to say about Trump
A friend of mine once asked me, "Why don’t you critique both sides in your letters to the editor?" I would, if Trump stood for anything positive, but he doesn’t. There’s nothing likable in his 79-year history and he makes no secret of it either. Many regard him as pure evil, an emissary from hell, from whom nobody escapes unharmed. How can I write positively about him without selling my soul to the devil? What else can I do?
Letter: Students should be applauded
The thug who threw gasoline on a peaceful demonstrator (page A1 of Feb. 7 edition) should be arrested and punished. I hope someone took photos of this violent perpetrator that can be used in court. Should we be grateful it wasn't sulfuric acid, or worse? It's sad that we harbor citizens who don't support the Constitution's right to freedom of assembly in our town.
Letter: Why does anyone support Trump?
What is wrong with America? Why would any fair-minded adult continue to support the obviously demented and hateful bully now dictating the destruction of our Constitutional rule-of-law with an iron fist while vandalizing the "Peoples' House?" Where are the checks and balances that were designed to constrain such an ill-mannered brat who was never taught how to behave? Who will be able to stop his wanton destruction of the "American Dream" for millions of people?
Letter: Trump should be held accountable
Which one of us has immunity from serious crimes, such as treason (Jan. 6. 2021), espionage (the Mar-a-Lago papers) and the destruction of "our house” — the White House? Donald Trump, of course. They were “slam-dunk cases” according to investigative reporting, Jack Smith and many legal experts, for which Trump promptly should have been arrested, but which mysteriously never happened.
Letter: All should be against facism
Is it so hard to understand that "antifa," i.e. antifascists, are opponents of fascism and Nazism? How is it that the majority of MAGA, including the hypocritical radical Christian nationalists, are ANTI antifascists? (bbc.com) Your grandparents fought in WWII against Hitler and Mussolini. They were true heroes, because freedom for free speech and not tyranny meant something to them, (historyhit.com). They are considered the greatest generation.
Letter: Coup attempt is underway
There are many types of leaders, some good, some bad and some downright evil, like Donald. While his long list of fraud, lies, illegal arrests and terror grows, Donald prepares to complete the coup d’état he started Jan. 6, 2021. Watching his utterly ridiculous press conferences, sitting behind the Resolute desk surrounded by a menagerie of clowns who pretend to take his nonsense seriously, is unbearable ...
Letter: When does American become great?
Didn't King Porkchop the Terrible promise to "Make America Great Again" by creating wealth in the U.S. like never seen before? And he did, but only for himself and a selected few billionaires. The rest of us might be rewarded in heaven. How did he do it? With a "Beautiful Bill," by declaring global trade war, closing industries, dismantling government departments and establishing his own federal ICE organization, not to be confused with ISIS. Are these ICE agents even real police officers?
Letter: How did we get here?
How in the name of heaven could a country like America, voluntary, or worse, elect a doomed loser as leader, who's now trying to implement Project 2025 — which everyone hates — before he expires? And why should he care about people's opinions, when the sicko can apparently rule and do as he pleases, to the music of the obsequious flattery of cabinet secretaries? You don't believe it's true, until you hear it. It's absolutely insane.
Deportations a waste of money
It's interesting what people do for a living. Some arrest and deport just about anyone from the streets, schools and workplaces, 3,000 a day for an average pay of $30 per hour. (ziprecruiter.com)
A dark perspective on happiness
Maxim Gorky wrote in "The Lower Depths" that a "Miserable being must find (a) more miserable being, then he is happy." This quote suggests a dark perspective on happiness in which some individuals find a twisted sense of satisfaction in the suffering of others.
A new kind of concentration camp
By A. Helge Andersson The Gestapo didn't sell souvenirs, hats and T-shirts at their death camps - as far as I know - but they do at Alligator Alcatraz, a site some call Auschwitz, Florida's newest tourist attraction that no one visits voluntarily. Several thousand guests can stay there for an indefinite period of time, free of charge, experience Florida's unique swamplands surrounded by, or visited by, alligators, pythons and always mosquitoes.
A response to a letter writer
I'm asking the writer of the "Display was tantrum by the left" (June 19) if it is possible to dislike something without hating it? Personally, I dislike onions, but I don't hate those who love them.
When will this all end
By A. Helge Andersson Alas, when will this misery end and I can simply enjoy peace and quiet rather than writing critical opinion pieces for the newspaper? It takes up too much time and doesn't seem to do any good. It's a frustrating writing exercise about a political system in decline, where corruption pays and decency doesn't count.
Data of the Insect Biome Atlas: a metabarcoding survey of the terrestrial arthropods of Sweden and Madagascar - Scientific Data
Abstract We present the data from the Insect Biome Atlas project (IBA), characterizing the terrestrial arthropod faunas of Sweden and Madagascar. Over 12 months, Malaise trap samples were collected weekly (biweekly or monthly in the winter, when feasible) at 203 locations within 100 sites in Sweden and weekly at 50 locations within 33 sites in Madagascar; this was complemented by soil and litter samples from each site.

Leave the immigrants alone
By A. Helge Andersson During a recent press conference, Donald Trump's press secretary couldn't mention undocumented immigrants without calling them "criminals," who therefore must be deported so that white citizens can feel safe. Research shows that the incarceration rate for immigrants is over 60% lower than for native-born Americans (brennancenter.org).
Letter writer clarifies position
Health insurers are like any business, motivated to make money and profits, or they go out of business. What makes people angry is that millions are denied care, while the bosses earn millions.
Trump is hardly presidential
How long will this Trump travesty be allowed to continue? One could easily say that MAGA has incredibly bad sense of humor, not to mention judgment, by sucking up all his nonsense like dish sponges.
Trump's choices spell trouble
By A. Helge Andersson I ask myself, is Trump's choice of administration staff a joke or an insult? In any case, his choice of this retinue of incompetents must please Vladimir immensely and should frighten even MAGA. One wonders what the FBI staff thinks about their future chief, or the future chief of the Navy who hasn't been on a boat, or Pete Hegseth with no military experience, whose mother sings the praises of him on Fox.
World leaders are laughing
Unbelievable. Before Trump is even sworn in as president, he threatens the British Prime minister with sanctions if he refuses to kiss his ring. Choose me or E.U. Foreign leaders are laughing at him. He's a Matt Gaetz multiplied 100 times.
Accepting a disappointing outcome
Is this the first time the U.S. has elected a convicted - although not yet sentenced - criminal, sexual offender and coup leader as president, with the possibility to acquit himself from any crimes he's guilty of? Should we get used to this kind of legal system?
Everyone loses if Trump wins
Some letter writer wrote not long ago that Democrats are obsessed with getting rid of Donald Trump. Of course we are. He's a threat not only to America, but to the world. What is it MAGA can't see and hear?
