A kiloelectron-volt ultrafast electron micro-diffraction apparatus using low emittance semiconductor photocathodes
V. ULTRAFAST ELECTRON DIFFRACTION As a proof-of-principle experiment, we measure the ultrafast heating of a gold diffraction sample (TED Pella #646) with mosaicity observed in static diffraction patterns indicating domains of sizes ∼10–100 μm. According to a two-temperature model of this process, the 515 nm pump beam deposits its energy into conduction electrons, which as a subsystem thermalize on a timescale much shorter than the 200 fs pump pulse length.
