DC weather Live Q&A: Frost in spots tonight; mild to warm days may continue into Halloween
Frost fades fast Monday; sunny and near 70 early week, a few more clouds midweek, warmer Friday — our CapitalWeather.com weekly Sunday 7pm livestream here and on our socials: : Starting next Sunday, after the time change, our weekly chat moves an hour earlier to 6 p.m.
Frost advisory tonight for many suburbs west of I-95
The National Weather Service has again issued a frost advisory from 1 to 9 a.m. Monday, this time reaching closer to DC. It covers many suburbs mainly west of I-95, including Montgomery, Howard, and Carroll counties in Maryland, and Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Fauquier, Stafford, and Spotsylvania counties in Virginia, including the Fredericksburg area. Clear skies and calm winds will let temperatures fall into the mid-30s in colder spots, especially valleys and other low-lying areas.
Halloween is looking dry and mild; here’s how it stacks up against history
Confidence is low-medium nearly a week out, but early signs favor a treat for trick-or-treaters, with temperatures dipping through the 60s to near 60 during trick-or-treat hours. Dry weather could come with highs near 70 or warmer next Saturday — above the 64-degree average high. That would fall well short of DC’s warmest Halloween: 85 degrees in 1950. Two years ago came close, though, with a high of 83 degrees. At the other extreme, the city dipped to a frigid 26 degrees on Halloween in 1917.
Frost advisory north and west of the Beltway tonight
Lows dip into the 30s north and west of DC, with frost likely in spots by daybreak. Frost and freeze risk tonight, from low (yellow) to higher (orange and red). It includes the mountains, where the growing season has ended and no advisories are issued.

Frost and freeze alerts hoisted again for tonight
For the second night in a row, the National Weather Service has issued frost (light shading above) and freeze (darker shading) alerts for parts of the DC area. Frost advisories cover many suburbs, with freeze warnings farther north and west — both run from 1 to 9 a.m. Monday. Patchy frost is also possible in low-lying spots away from the city. National Weather Service/NWS Clear skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to drop quickly tonight.

After Isaias, warmth and sunshine return for the workweek.
Looking beyond today’s tropical remnant rains, we have a warming and brightening trend coming. Tuesday and Wednesday may end up being the best outdoor days of the week, judging by temperature potential (above) and lowest cloud cover (below). Tuesday and Wednesday line up for lots of sunshine and generous warmth — two variables that often track together. Thursday looks like the cloudiest and coolest day of the workweek — also not surprising.
Isaias’ rains to benefit region’s longer-term water needs
Even with a solid amount of rain on the way, flooding concerns are limited, partly because soils are ready to absorb it. Longer-term recharge is welcome news for many of the region’s waterways, evidenced by below-average flows (oranges and reds). The good news remains that we aren’t in any sort of severe drought. Yellow shades, below, indicate merely “abnormally dry” conditions along much of the Potomac and Beltway area.
DC-area forecast: Nice today, then rain from the remnants of Isaias by Sunday

Decent rainfall amounts over the last day
Stripes of moderate rain have fallen over the last 24 hours through the region. One or two spots have verified amounts over one inch, but most areas received a third to three-quarters of an inch. You can see the cutoffs: Hagerstown to the north; Richmond to the south — both on the edge of the rainfall shield.
An upcoming week of amazing weather after Monday transition
Hard to argue with most of these upcoming temperatures, above! Some early clouds then breezes tomorrow before sunshine returns along with epic comfort for the vast majority of the week. The Outdoor planner is available in our Forecast Lab Perhaps Tuesday and Wednesday mornings are a bit cool for some? Overall, though, get ready for a lot of high Daily Digits and Nice Days! October is peak "😎 Nice Day!" season per Ian Livingston's great graph in the article linked just above. Soak it up!

Gradual workweek clearing and warming
Glancing at the graphic above, we can see skies may take until mid- to late week to give us noticeable sunshine. Wednesday and Thursday, specifically, have the best chances for unfettered sunshine. Thursday currently has the best chance to be our most reliably warm day, though Friday carries an outside chance to spike even higher, potentially near 90. Warmth may, unsurprisingly, behave along a similar timeline, with upper 80s possible before the workweek ends.
A 20-degree temperature difference across the region
Clouds and rain made all the difference in today's temperatures. Nearest the nor'easter, east and northeast of DC, many spots remain in the mid-50s with clouds, wind, and rain. West and southwest of town where it has been drier and clearer, temperatures warmed into the mid-70s!

Outdoor plans? Short window Monday, or wait until Friday
In our Forecast Lab you can find the Outdoor Planner (above) which does a solid job summarizing outdoor conditions. Rain amounts still look healthy this upcoming week, and have only increased a small amount since our last update. There aren't many opportunities for outdoor plans until perhaps Friday and Saturday given the upcoming weather pattern change. Tomorrow may end up mild enough and with a couple worthy hours for outdoor plans, but the trend is clear this week: cooler and wetter.
Weed pollen continues to be primary allergen in the region
Rain chances and higher humidity in the forecast should — even if temporarily — settle most allergen particles out of the atmosphere in the coming days. Despite being in fall allergy season, we may now be past the peak of weed pollen. Grasses, a small part of the current allergen mix, may be at or past their secondary fall peak as well. Last bit of good news, spore levels are remaining below average for this time of year.

Current thundershowers in the region to weaken and dissipate with time
By this evening and especially overnight hours, the thundershowers in the region are expected to slowly–albeit unsteadily–push off to our southeast, weaken with time, and decrease in their coverage area.
To help fall lovers manage expectations amid this week's brief fall-like weather preview, we still have a while before foliage arrives or we see our first freeze.
Slight risk of flash flooding tonight, with the better chance for downpours after dark
We're under a slight risk of flash flooding today into tonight (yellow shading in above graphic) but the setup is a study in contrasts. Forecast rain totals are fairly modest: Mostly a quarter- to a half-inch, overall. But, the atmosphere is loaded with far more moisture than these numbers suggest.
DC-area forecast: Cooler and rather cloudy today with an early shower; rain chances rise late Saturday

DC's losing daylight fast in September
September is the year's steepest month for daylight loss — DC is losing nearly 18 minutes of daylight a week at the peak, and that rate maxes out right at the equinox (Sept. 22). Tomorrow will be 2 minutes 27 seconds shorter than today. That's a lot of light gone. Also notice, in the very top graphic, the steep, steady line – that's the equinox signature, as the sun's path across the sky shifts fastest this time of year. The numbers for DC this September: Total daylight lost, Sept. 1 → Sept.
Stable to slightly improved drought conditions around DC
Small areas of improvement around the region, but largely the latest drought data is unchanged from last week. Still, we have some dry soils in the region: Does this match watering needs for gardeners and farmers who may have dry (red and orange shaded) soils? Conversely, if your area shows blue, indicating moist soils, have you been able to forgo irrigation?

Allergen update
As you can see from our above health widget, moderate allergen levels are probably affecting some of you, especially weed allergy sufferers. While weed pollen is moderate (7.67 grains/cubic meter) around DC now, it may increase into September — potentially boosted by next week's heat. Grass pollen, moderate now at 3.19 grains/cubic meter, is also expected to have a secondary annual peak heading into fall.
Celebrating today's comfort
Temperatures, above, have stayed enjoyably below average (86ยบ at DCA airport) highs today for the vast majority of the region. Humidity levels are also sublime, with dew points in the 50s for many of us. Dew points this afternoon. (Weather Now) Rain chances return after today. It may take until midweek to see high-enough chances, intensity, and amounts that are worth planning around. The upcoming hot week means it'll be a while before we issue a ๐ Nice Day! again.

Clouds mostly hold off through Wednesday (graphic above) but, by late that day and overnight, we probably transition into more humidity and rain chances. Watch humidity rise late week: Dew points are tame through Tuesday, possibly Wednesday, but notice that uncomfortable 70s (purple) could return Thursday and/or Friday. Rain chances may focus on Thursday, though a few showers and storms are possible late Wednesday.
Rain dodged DC today but not tonight
By late evening, even the Beltway starts getting wet from showers and storms. See forecast radar animation from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m., above. One or two may turn strong. The very marginal damaging wind threat should stay primarily along or west of I-270 and the Beltway, perhaps west of I-95 as well.
