BALTIMORE (AP) - Mired in an uncomfortable slump that uncomfortably shortened their lead in the AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays were desperate for a victory. As he had done for much of the season, 36-year-old Nick Martinez delivered. Martinez retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced Sunday, and the Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 to avert a three-game sweep. After losing three straight and seven of nine, Tampa Bay turned to the crafty right-hander to end the skid.
Loftin and Rave HRs, Isbel's 3 RBIs help Royals win 8th straight game, 11-7 over Tigers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Nick Loftin and John Rave homered, Kyle Isbel drove in three runs and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to eight games with an 11-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Royals' winning streak is their longest since May 2024. Kansas City has won seven straight at home, only the fourth time in franchise history the team has completed an undefeated homestand of seven or more games.
Monken says Watson's postgame comments won't factor in decision about Browns starting QB
CLEVELAND (AP) - Todd Monken will take at least one more day before deciding if Shedeur Sanders or Deshaun Watson will be the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback on Sept. 13 in Jacksonville. The first-year head coach said he anticipates announcing the starter on Monday. Monken also noted that Watson's comments after the Browns' 31-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday are not expected to play a deciding factor in his final decision.

Williams and Alcaraz were drawn Sunday to face one of the teams that advances from the eight-team qualifying tournament that will be played Monday. Williams will be returning to the U.S. Open for the first time since 2022.
Muncy's solo homer caps off A's rally as Oakland beats Houston 7-6
HOUSTON (AP) - Max Muncy hit a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning and the Athletics rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the Houston Astros 7-6 on Sunday. Brian Serven hit a three-run shot, his fourth, that began the six-run rally in the fifth inning. Lawrence Butler had an RBI double, and Tommy White drove in two to even the score 6-6. Muncy then drove a fastball from Steven Okert (6-2) to center to give the A's the lead for good.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Paige Bueckers scored 18 of her 32 points in the first quarter, Jessica Shepard had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and the Dallas Wings beat the Seattle Storm 92-70 on Sunday to tie the franchise's single-season wins record. The Wings (22-16) can clinch a playoff spot with a home win against Portland on Tuesday. Bueckers was unstoppable in the first quarter, making seven of her eight shot attempts, including all four 3-pointers.

She died Saturday in Los Angeles, her family said in a statement to The Associated Press. No cause was given.
