What to Do About Your Underutilized Vehicles
Fleet managers probably know how many vehicles are in their fleets, and they may also know how many vehicles should be in their fleets. Unfortunately, for many, that second number is smaller than the first number. At a Glance Fleets looking to improve their utilization should: Make sure they have accurate utilization numbers Seek support from upper management Work with a fleet user group from various departments Disseminate utilization reports periodically.
Are Your Drivers Safe?
My husband and I make a good driving team. This is what we do: I drive while he points out all the people he sees going 75 mph on the freeway who are texting. We see their heads bobbing up and down, their screens lit up. We see some of them wobble in their lanes, sometimes swerving into other lanes. Stay away from them, he says, disgusted with Los Angeles drivers. If this continues for a while, he threatens to call the police, but truthfully, what can the police do?

How Many Degrees of Separation?
There is a documentary in the works by two millennials who are hitchhiking across the country, using only their networks and up to four degrees of separation. This follows an idea researchers proposed several years ago that everyone is connected by four degrees of separation due to Facebook, reducing the number of connections from six (remember six degrees of Kevin Bacon?). Obviously the degrees of connection within any industry are a lot smaller.

What Your Vehicles Say About Your Fleet
After a while of writing about fleet, you start to notice all the fleet cars on the road, from delivery vehicles to work trucks to parking enforcement vehicles. I recently drove up the coast of California, stopping by various beach cities, and taking photos of every fleet vehicle I saw. It wasn’t a work trip, but spotting fleet vehicles has become somewhat automatic. During this trip, I started to notice certain things. Are the vehicles clean, and of a decent age? Are drivers driving safely?

I won’t say too much about the musical, but the character of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton obsesses about his legacy, what he leaves behind, and how his story will be told after he’s gone. Recently, we ran a news story about a public agency that decided to change its driver policy after numerous minor collisions increased fleet repair costs. Drivers are now required to take safety courses following a collision. Additionally, if a second person is in the car, the passenger is required to exit the vehicle and guide the driver while he or she is backing out of a parking space.

Clarifying NHTSA's Updated 5-Star Safety Rating Program

The updated five-star government safety rating program from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) includes enhanced crash tests and provides customers with an Overall Vehicle Score for the first time. According to NHTSA, this makes it easier to compare the relative safety performance of vehicles in crash survivability as well as crash avoidance. The new program is set to take effect for select 2011-MY vehicles.

The shop not only consolidates various facilities and brings together about 40 staff members, but it has also been certified a LEED Gold facility by the U.S. Green Building Council, a designation Fleet Superintendent Mahanth Joishy believes is a first for any fleet shop.

I responded I was and could, and before you know it, our IT administrator wrote to me telling me to “stop e-mailing Sherb.” Of course, it wasn’t him — some joker was trying to get me to buy a gift card. The different e-mail address was the giveaway, but I hadn’t checked.

Its recommended vehicle mix is 90% internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and 10% battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), all of which would be purpose-built.
