I wonder who picked up the bill.
Posted Oct 5, 2026 at 8:52 PM UTC I wonder who picked up the bill. Smash Bros. boss Masahiro Sakurai recently posted a photo of a dinner featuring a who’s who of Japanese game design luminaries, including himself. (If you don’t recognize all of the faces, here’s a run-down.) The possibilities for new Smash characters is now nearly endless. A whole lot of changes for Control Resonant.
Posted Oct 1, 2026 at 3:22 PM UTC A whole lot of changes for Control Resonant. Remedy just put out version 1.4.0 of the game, and it includes a huge list of updates, which are detailed in these very extensive patch notes. The highlight is the New Game ++ mode, but there are bunch of other quality of life improvements. My favorite? “Dylan now audibly reacts to doing Tasks.” Same, buddy.
Amazon’s Carrie is a cyberbullying nightmare Original
Do we really need a new version of Carrie? That’s the question that plagues any attempt to reimagine the classic horror tale. Stephen King’s 1974 novel remains one of his most iconic, and the film version from Brian De Palma and Sissy Spacek two years later remains unsurpassed, despite a handful adaptations that followed in the ensuing decades. Any new iteration of the story bears the burden of proving why it needs to exist in the first place.
Gears of War: E-Day is a great game launching at a terrible time
There are few blockbuster games that are as confident as Gears of War: E-Day. A prequel to one of Xbox’s most transformative titles, E-Day knows exactly what it wants to be: a brutal, tense, and self-aware action game, one that is stronger because it doesn’t deviate from that premise. Twenty years since the original Gears of War, there’s still nothing like its particular brand of up-close cover shooter gameplay, and E-Day shows that it still hits hard two decades later.

Everyone loves a good murder board.
Posted Sep 29, 2026 at 1:00 PM UTC Everyone loves a good murder board. It’s been a solid year for crime thrillers with the likes of Furious, and now Apple TV is entering the fray with Nocturne. It’s hard to gather too much from the new trailer — though Stephen Graham is shaping up to be a very fun serial killer — but the show starts streaming on October 30th. Gaming’s biggest horror series are more vital than ever
For the third year in a row, I’ve been scared out of my wits by a new Silent Hill game. First it was the modern remake of Silent Hill 2, then the Japan-set spinoff Silent Hill F. Now I find myself slowly crawling through a quaint Scottish town in Silent Hill: Townfall, trying my best not to get brutally murdered by demonic creatures chasing me through the streets. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for a franchise that once seemed like it was on life support.

A quick look at a long movie.
Posted Sep 24, 2026 at 4:17 PM UTC A quick look at a long movie. While there are still some questions around the international rollout of Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk documentary, US distributor Bleecker Street is forging ahead, and has a new trailer to prove it. The trailer does a good job of summing up what to expect from a very, very lengthy film. Video games have given us plenty of ways to traverse huge open worlds, but none have felt quite as oddly exhilarating as manipulating gravity in Control Resonant’s twisted version of New York City. It’s a game that lets you flip, twist, and fly through the air, while exploring settings that look ripped out of Inception. It’s as if you mashed up the meta storytelling of House of Leaves with the inventive platforming of Super Mario Galaxy and somehow turned it into a coherent experience.

Xbox is barely Xbox anymore Original
Xbox has become a shell of its former self — and things are only getting worse. As part of its planned cuts impacting around 3,200 workers, the company announced today more changes that will further dilute the brand. Studios are being consolidated, others are on the brink of being closed altogether, and Xbox’s most iconic franchise, Halo, is being moved to a new developer. The future of Xbox looks more uncertain than ever.

Grand Theft Auto VI’s soundtrack will feature 34 brand-new tracks Original
After teasing a music-related reveal a few days ago, Rockstar has officially announced the soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto VI. Called Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, the soundtrack will feature 34 songs, which Rockstar describes as “brand-new, original tracks.” Based on the first six singles, which are available today, it seems that the collection will span a pretty wide range of genres, with everyone from Keith Richards to Travis Scott contributing.
The streamers are fighting over Halloween Original
The Toronto International Film Festival is a place to go to see the future of film, but this year it also provided a glimpse at what is coming very soon in the realm of streaming. Four different streamers — Peacock, Netflix, Amazon, and AMC — all premiered early looks at upcoming horror-adjacent series that are dropping very soon. And by doing it at TIFF, they showed just how important the month of October has become in the realm of streaming.
The 2.5-hour AI-generated Odyssey movie is 2.5 hours too long Original
Christopher Nolan’s engrossing take on The Odyssey dominated at the box office and spurred a newfound interest in classic literature among filmgoers. But a new retelling of the story made entirely with AI is so bad that it might just make viewers hate the original tale altogether. The new film, called Odysseus: The Fall, comes via AI firm Fountain 0 and is written and directed by company cofounder Ash Koosha, who also lent his likeness to the title character and created all of the music.

Vintage Violence is an absurdist crime thriller for phone addicts
There are a lot of movies that have tried to seamlessly integrate modern tech — text messages, livestreams, etc. — into their storytelling. Some of the most novel attempts have been in the genre space, like the Twitch-style horror flick Deadstream. But the most chaotic to date might just be Vintage Violence, an absurd crime thriller with lots of blood, jokes, and screentime.

TIFF 2026: The latest movie reviews from Toronto
The four-hour-long Elon Musk documentary might be preaching to the choir It makes sense that Musk is a long film. The latest from Alex Gibney, who has previously directed documentaries about Theranos and Steve Jobs, is an impressively thorough retelling of the story of Elon Musk, from his early days as a dot-com millionaire to “taking a wood chipper” to vital US government departments. In order to understand Musk’s rise to power, you need to know the whole story.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother will make you forget all about Marvel’s Blade disaster
Marvel’s mishandling of its Blade reboot will likely go down as one of the studio’s biggest mistakes. There was a great actor in place to play the vampire hunter (Mahershala Ali), and a promising director set to take over the reins (Bassam Tariq). In retrospect, though, the disappointing demise of Blade might not be such a bad thing, because Tariq and Ali have collaborated on something much more interesting than a superhero reboot: the powerful hitman thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.

Laika’s stop-motion fantasy Wildwood looks so smooth
Due to a scheduling mishap, I was only able to check out two movies on my second day at the Toronto International Film Festival — but I did manage to get an early look at and some fascinating details on one of my most anticipated films this year. Even if you don’t know the name Laika, you probably know the studio’s work; it’s the animation house behind stop-motion hits like ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings.

Wolverine on the PS5 goes back to a simpler (and bloodier) style of action game Original
Marvel’s Wolverine captures just how angry its lead character is. The latest PS5 exclusive from Spider-Man developer Insomniac, Wolverine is a straightforward action game that is at its best when you’re (literally) slicing through enemies or thrust into a sequence pulled from a blockbuster movie, like climbing the fuselage of a plane as it careens toward land or racing a motorcycle across rain-slicked city streets.

Nintendo Direct September 2026: The biggest news and trailers
It’s almost time for part two of Nintendo’s double feature this week. On Tuesday, the company hosted a showcase all about the Legend of Zelda franchise, including footage and a November 5th release date for the Switch 2 Ocarina of Time remake. On Wednesday, the company will be airing its next Nintendo Direct, which will spotlight Switch 2 games “launching this winter” in an approximately 45-minute presentation.

The company held a 30-minute showcase this morning focused entirely on its Legend of Zelda franchise, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
