Hindutva, An Ideology Built On The Pain Of Minorities
A foreign outlet interviewed me this week and at the end of it, after we had wrapped up, the interviewer said he was surprised. He said he did not know that this was the position India was in, and I find this is quite a common reaction. Other than the academics who study India and foreign correspondents posted here, few realise how much India has changed from the image they had of it.
The wonder that is India
How Hindutva has reshaped India’s politics, institutions and society — and why the future looks increasingly dark A foreign outlet interviewed me this week and at the end of it, after we had wrapped up, the interviewer said he was surprised. He said he did not know this was the position India was in, and I find this to be quite a common reaction. Other than the academics who study India and foreign correspondents posted here, few realise how much India has changed from the image they had of it.
Aakar Patel | Faith Vs Law & The Absurd Politics Of Ghar Wapsi
Headline from this week: “Pune Police withdraws conversion law provisions from 2 cases after officials find Act not in force yet.” Our ever-vigilant law enforcers have not only sorted out and solved the problems of previous laws but also future ones. The new law referred to has since come into effect and is one of the gifts the BJP has given India since 2018 when the first such law came in Uttarakhand.
India’s conversion laws: Solving a problem that barely exists?
The history of conversion in India raises the question: are anti-conversion laws solving a problem or creating one, asks Aakar Patel Our ever-vigilant law enforcers have not only sorted out and solved the problems of previous laws but also those of future ones. The new law referred to has since come into effect and is one of the gifts the BJP has given India since 2018, when the first such law came into force in Uttarakhand.
Aakar Patel | Without Freedom, Does The Word ‘Independence’ Really Mean Much?
The term “independence” is linked to “freedom” and is a meaningless word without it. A few years ago I had surveyed the state of freedom in India as the world saw it. I had done this for one of my books, but periodically I revisit this list of indices to see what changes have come. On Independence Day last Saturday, I thought it would be apposite to do this. Some of the organisations which are referred to here may be unfamiliar to readers but they are reputable and their findings are respected.
How Free Is India Today?
As India's decline continued on global indices, the government first blamed methodology and then motives. This is where we remain today as we wish each other and ourselves a happy Independence Day, points out Aakar Patel. IMAGE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks during the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, August 15, 2026. Multiple global indices have flagged concerns over India's civic freedoms, democracy, press freedom and social tensions.

Aakar Patel | Why Indians Need To Protect, Expand The Right To Hold Peaceful Protests
There was a remarkable exchange in the Delhi high court last week. The government was asked why it was not considering shutting down Jantar Mantar area as a venue for protests. “Why don’t you shut it down? According to me, these things should not happen in the city, but it’s the government’s call. Why should the city be put to ransom unnecessarily?” the court asked.

Aakar Patel | Why India Is Now In The Race For A ‘Non-permanent’ Seat At The UNSC
The “Mother of Democracy” is standing for a non-permanent elected seat at the United Nations Security Council. Non-permanent because it is a two-year term and elected because 10 seats are shared between the 188 member states wanting to sit alongside the five permanent members. These 10 seats come with no veto power, so if any one of China, the US, Russia, UK or France do not want something, it is rejected no matter how the other 14 vote.
What exactly is India asking the world to vote for?

Why India's Youth Anger Exploded
The failure of the State when it directly affects our lives, through a corrupt exam system, has produced this current anger, points out Aakar Patel. IMAGE: A protest at Sansad Marg, New Delhi, July 20, 2026. Current protests stem from deeper frustrations with governance rather than only dissatisfaction over examination-related issues. Urban elites experience limited dependence on government services, unlike the majority relying on public welfare, healthcare and education.
Aakar Patel | The State and the Individual: Anger Over Its Failure Led to Minister’s Exit
Many are puzzled by the size of the Cockroach Janta Party-led protests and the rapidity with which they delivered a famous civil rights victory. To understand the environment that produced this anger, we need to set aside the immediate issue on which the youth have mobilised and step back to assess the larger picture. Let us begin with a question: What is our relationship with the State? A word that we can take to mean the government, whether local or central.
Whose movement is it anyway?
The anger over exams makes sense only when viewed against the widening gap between citizens and the State Many were puzzled by the size of the (now called off) protests and the speed with which they sprang up. To understand the environment that produced this anger, we need to set aside the immediate issue over which the youth have mobilised and step back to assess the larger picture. Let us begin with a question: what is our relationship with the State?
A victory that may still fall short
The third question on what I wish comes out of this moment has a two-part answer. Of course I want the students to receive justice and for the government to accept accountability. But I also wish that the crisis in education helps all of us and particularly the government focus on the important question of what lies ahead. There are clear signals that employment and poverty will be the two main problems India will have to confront.
Youth Protest: The Lasting Lessons
At the end of this journey, no matter now it ends, these youngsters will know something essential about the Indian government, the Indian judiciary, the Indian media, the Indian police, the Indian laws and indeed about Indian society, asserts Aakar Patel. IMAGE: Protesters gather in large numbers near Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, July 23, 2026. India's problems of incompetence and corruption are real, structural and societal.
Aakar Patel | The Lessons That India Learns As Wangchuk’s Fast Scuttled By Govt
A few thoughts on the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest and the Union government’s comical reaction come to mind. The hunger strike by activists, including Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, had just one demand: the minister of education should resign. Why? Because the minister failed at one of the most important tasks he was assigned: Holding the Neet exam without corruption. Readers may recall that in 2024 the paper leaked and the same minister was in charge, but clung on.
The government has a Wangchuk problem of its own making
Refusing accountability over NEET has turned a hunger strike into a larger battle over democracy, writes Aakar Patel A few thoughts on the Cockroach Janata Party's protest come to mind.
Anxiety Grows Over SIR Verification
The population is gripped by anxiety against arbitrariness and the cruelty of a state that sells its actions as minimum government, asserts Aakar Patel. IMAGE: Residents queue up to submit their documents for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) at a help camp set up by the police on the premises of the New Jalpaiguri outpost police station in Siliguri, July 13, 2026.
Aakar Patel | Of NRC & SIR: How Governments' Use Of Arbitrary Powers Put Citizens In A Fix
One common trait in lawless nations is the high levels of anxiety against arbitrariness. Medieval texts tell us this has always been the case in our parts. Cruelty is couched as process and millions put through torture. Special Intensive Revision forms are being handed out across India. It is impossible on a first reading of this form, no matter how educated the reader, to understand what one is required to do, even though it is a single page.

Aakar Patel | Why The State Must Stop Use Of Pellet Guns To Control Crowds
The teaser for Chauhaan — latest in the line of movies selling majoritarian propaganda — is out. It opens in the sort of place that the Indian government prefers to have its stories set — a street in Pulwama, stones in the air, the security forces in formation. The voiceover calls teargas ineffective because protection masks are easily accessible online. Water cannons are called temporary solutions.
From pellet guns to propaganda: What the Chauhaan teaser leaves out
The film calls pellet guns 'limited force'. The record from Kashmir tells a starkly different story, writes Aakar Patel The teaser for Chauhaan — the latest in a line of films selling majoritarian propaganda — is out.
Why Modi Wants To Curb NGOs Funding
Larger NGOs could no longer work with smaller ones, especially those organisations working on the ground that had no means of or expertise in raising money themselves, reveals Aakar Patel. The government is implementing policy objectives through executive rules after failing to secure parliamentary approval. New NGO regulations impose restrictions on activities, foreign personnel, social media conduct, and operational jurisdictions.
Aakar Patel | New ‘Rules’ Are Brought In To Keep All NGOs On A Tight Leash
What cannot be passed in Parliament as a new law can be brought into effect through a change in the rules. The practical effect is almost the same and the object is achieved. This is not what democratic nations ought to be doing, but then there is a real good reason why India is now, so many years after 1947, classified as being “partly free” and not a real democracy. This March, the government introduced a bill to attack, yet again, non-governmental organisations.
Rule, not law: How the State is tightening the noose around NGOs
Unable to legislate, the government is increasingly achieving the same ends through executive rules What cannot be passed in Parliament as law can be brought into effect through changes in the rules. The effect on the ground is often the same and the objective is achieved. This is not how democratic nations ought to function, but there is perhaps a reason why India is now, so many years after 1947, classified as 'partly free' rather than a full democracy.
Aakar Patel | From ‘Indo-Pacific’ To Pacific: India To Pay Price For Bid To Play Off US, China
Last week, on June 17, it was reported that the United States had renamed the Indo-Pacific Command back as the US Pacific Command. This was announced by the US department of war, and was accompanied by an incorrect map of Kashmir. The same day, the US President met our Prime Minister at the G-7 summit in France and said that Narendra Modi is “a very tough negotiator… You look at this man. He’s the most beautiful-looking man. How India's media lost its nerve — and its money, under PM Modi

How India's media lost its nerve — and its money, under PM Modi
In the summer of 2020, India had no shortage of stories. The country was emerging from what was described as the world’sharshest lockdown, one that had triggered thelargest internal migration since Partition and, it later emerged, had been enforced without consultation within the government. The economy was about to record its first recession in four decades, driven not so much by the pandemic as by the lockdown itself, which contracted the economy by nearly 24 percent in that quarter.

Aakar Patel | Six Decades From Now, What Will Modi’s Legacy Be Remembered For?
Ram Madhav, a friend, has written a fine piece (“Modi’s road is distinct as he passes Nehru’s milestone”) on Prime Minister Narendra Modi seemingly reaching an important milestone.
