He prepares for his concerts by avoiding routine and embracing as much freedom as the moment allows. Yet there is little spontaneity or ostentation in his renderings of Bach. His recordings of The Art of Fugue and Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier reveal playing that neither soars nor lilts.

Librettist and reader Marc Bamuthi Joseph In 2021, when the Los Angeles Philharmonic first asked composer Carlos Simon to write a new score, he was not sure what artistic direction he should take. Composing another concerto or symphony would certainly have fluffed his ego. But, as he relayed on the Black Music Seen podcast, he rather wanted to stretch the limits of his voice. To do so, Simon thought he ought to lean into his roots.

I got a job writing feature stories about classical music for the Gainesville Sun in Gainesville, Florida.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. In fact, I always try to set aside one project per year that I do entirely on my old Royal.

Probably Carl Bernstein as played by Dustin Hoffman.
