Homoploid Hybridization Resolves the Origin of Octoploid Strawberries

|
By Zhen Fan, Aaron Liston, Douglas E Soltis, Pamela Sue Soltis
| BioRxiv
Abstract The identity of the diploid progenitors of octoploid cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) has been subject to much debate. Past work identified four subgenomes and consistent evidence for F. californica (previously named F. vesca subsp. bracteata) and F. iinumae as donors for subgenomes A and B, respectively, with conflicting results for the origins of subgenomes C and D. Here, reticulate phylogeny and admixture analysis support hybridization between F. viridis and F.

Why do strawberries have seeds on the outside?

By Shen Ridenbaugh, Aaron Liston

Wild strawberries are deliciously sweet snacks, as long as you don't mind their gritty little seeds. But why are these "seeds" on the outside, given that the seeds of many fruits - like apples, oranges, kiwis and mangos - are on the inside? It's actually a trick question, said Aaron Liston, professor and herbarium director in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University. That's because what appear to be a strawberry's "seeds" are actually its fruit, he said.

On the origin of strawberries - Nature Plants

| Nature Verified
High-quality genomes of the cultivated strawberry’s progenitors provide the strongest evidence to date for the identity and chromosomal composition of the four subgenomes of octoploid strawberry. The octoploid nature of F. × ananassa and its wild progenitors was discovered nearly 100 years ago by counting chromosomes3,4, but the small size of strawberry chromosomes limited what could be inferred about their subgenome composition.
