Abstract Recent years have seen increasing calls to test L2 vocabulary knowledge under a meaning recall modality (Stoeckel et al., Citation2021), where learners write the meaning of words in their L1, as such tests may have a closer relation to vocabulary knowledge as it relates to reading proficiency than meaning recognition multiple-choice tests (Kremmel & Schmitt, Citation2016).
