BWW Review: JQA at San Diego Repertory Theatre
JQA is an excellent and engaging piece, especially in this run-up to our election In the popular zeitgeist, John Qunicy Adams hasn't had the best of luck. He's often overshadowed by his father, John Adams the 2nd President of the U.S., and is also overshadowed by the controversial, and hot-headed Andrew Jackson who beat Quincy Adams in his second run for president.

The Tempest
Produced by Round House Theatre in collaboration with Folger Theatre Shakespeare's tale of betrayal, reconciliation, and love is part fairy tale, part romance–and all magic. In this imaginative staging by Aaron Posner and Teller, Prospero's island transforms into a traveling tent show of trickery and amazement. The production "awakens ... a sense of pleasurable, almost childlike wonder" (New York Times).

Review: Stranded Between Hope and Regret in ‘Life Sucks.’
Critic’s Pick Image Austin Pendleton, left, and Nadia Bowers in Aaron Posner’s play, which he describes as “sort of adapted from ‘Uncle Vanya.’” Aaron Posner’s “Life Sucks.,” a New York Times Critic’s Pick, has reopened at the Acorn Theater on Theater Row, with Kevin Isola now playing Vanya. Here is an edited version of Elisabeth Vincentelli’s April 1, 2019, review of the production, which originated at the Wild Project. A middle-aged, grouchily single man is bemoaning his fate.
Winding Road nails 'Stupid F#!*ing Bird'
It takes guts to fool around with Chekhov. And Aaron Posner has got ‘em. “Stupid F#!*ing Bird,” Posner’s adaptation of Chekhov’s dark and brilliant “The Seagull,” is, well, dark and brilliant. And Winding Road Theatre Ensemble’s production is, as well. Posner basically follows the framework of Chekhov’s slice-of-dreary-life story but sets it in modern time and infuses it with lots of swearing and lots of humor.
Winding Road takes flight with “Stupid F#!*ing Bird"
Remember Chekhov’s “The Seagull?” Of course you do; it’s a brilliant play. You might want to keep it in mind when you see Winding Road Theatre Ensemble’s “Stupid F#!*ing Bird,” Aaron Posner’s loose adaptation of Chekhov’s classic. Or not. This is a comedy that works either way. Posner takes the story about theater, love and misery, sets it in modern times and infuses the slice-of-life piece with a swath of satire. He also takes liberties, dispensing with some characters, combining others.
Aurora Fox’s Latest Season Shows Off Their New Producer’s Boundary Stretching Vision
The Aurora Fox was built in 1946 as a movie theater. A fire in the early 80s forced a closure. It reopened as the Aurora Fox Arts Center in 1985, after the city and private sector banded together to restore it.
'Stupid (Expletive) Bird' a cheeky Chekhov send-up
Among Anton Chekhov’s great plays, his 1896 classic “The Seagull” is a particular favorite among theaters because it is, at least in part, about theater. One character is a famous actress constantly at odds with her son, an aspiring avant-garde playwright who despises the conventional drama she does and rails about the need for new forms of theater. This yearning for the new forms may also help explain why playwrights and theaters love to create new forms of “The Seagull” itself.
Review: 'My Name is Asher Lev' at Live Theater
For some, art is the religion.Others, religion the art.The two concepts collide in “My Name is Asher Lev,” now onstage at Live Theatre Workshop. Asher Lev is a young boy in a strict Hasidic community who is possessed by the need to create art. His passion is in direct conflict with the strict religious beliefs of his parents and his community.
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Oh, what fools these mortals be, allowing two versions of the same play to overlap by three weekends. Don’t believe it. For a new work, this could prove disastrous; for a high school staple that’s more than 20 years old (give or take four centuries), it couldn’t matter less.
Review: 'Stupid (expletive) Bird' is a (expletive) blast
Chekhov's "The Seagull" crashes through the looking glass in "Stupid F---ing Bird." Aaron Posner's outrageous comedy transports the classic 19th-century tragedy into the age of iPads and F-bombs. A metatheatrical romp designed to thrill those who find the original hard to relate to, "Bird" manages to be both clever and sincere, which is no small feat.
