Scleral buckling is a surgical technique that has been in use for more than 75 years since it was first introduced by Ernst Custodis in 1949.1 Since then, the technique has evolved considerably. Significant contributions were made by Charles Schepens, MD, who promoted the encirclage concept, and by Harvey Lincoff, MD, and Ingrid Kreissig, MD, who advocated the minimal approach of segmental buckling.
