Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Tom Wright
There are many things that make Wofford College what it is – the students, classes, Greek life, and much more. One of the most important aspects of what makes Wofford the school that it is is the professors and staff across its many departments. Dr. Tom Write is one of these professors, and has worked as associate professor of mathematics here at Wofford for the last 15 years, teaching all levels of math to students who both love and are terrified of the subject.
A New Home for Health, Housing, and Healing
By ABBY TAYLOR Photo Courtesy of Native American Community Clinic Native American Community Clinic officially opened the doors to its new clinic on September 15th , bringing a long-held vision for expanded access to healthcare, culture, and healing to life. When NACC began planning the new clinic, we saw an opportunity to think bigger about how this land could serve the community.
A New Wave of Horror
Movies have long been a mode of entertainment for people, whether it be at the theaters or at home, with differing opinions on what the best movie genre is. Between action, comedy, romance, horror, and many more to choose from, it’s no surprise that many people have strong opinions. Horror specifically is a genre that many have opinions on, and either love or hate it.
Invasive hornet species found in South Carolina
When the topic of invasive species comes up, most people wouldn’t think a type of hornet as being an invasive predator that needs to be controlled. That, however, is what is happening in the United States, and in South Carolina, right now. In the beekeeping community, it is known that hornets are a natural predator to bees.
Hearing the Holy Call
In a world where PR for the priesthood is lukewarm, at best, and downright blasphemous, at worst, the International Institute for Culture (IIC) is making a difference. Through their newest initiative, Shepherding Future Shepherds, the IIC aims to address the “urgent shortage” of priests by highlighting priests doing good and holy work and inspiring other young men to discern the call to priesthood.

When Joe Khalil ‘27 told people that he wanted to run 50 miles in one day as a way to fundraise money, most people told him he was insane. Matt Myers ‘27, though, created a logo within 24 hours of Khalil telling him of this idea. On April 18, Khalil is running 50 miles in 1 day, hopefully in under 12 hours, and is fundraising for the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen and Miracle Hill Ministries.
Winter weather Wofford food
Snowy weather is not the norm for South Carolina, and having snow– especially a decent amount– two weekends in a row is basically unheard of. Yet that’s exactly the weather we had at the end of interim, with Wofford College needing to create a plan for the campus as to how the college will respond to the weather.
Investing in Vocations
It’s not news to say religious vocations are languishing in the United States. According to Vocation Ministry’s 2025 "State of Priestly Vocations" report, not one large American diocese is producing enough seminarians to maintain their current number of priests. The figures are similarly bleak for religious vocations. What is news, however, is the way nonprofits and other institutions of civil society are taking this problem in hand and seeking a remedy, one religious calling at a time.

“Since the dawn of civilization, the triumphs of the tongue have rivaled, if not surpassed, those of the sword.” —Calvin Coolidge In a world where young people have more experience in the public forum of Tik-Tok than in the true agora, the acclaimed Speech and Debate program of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation is determined to help high-school students across the country gain confidence and develop communication and rhetoric skills that will serve them long after a debate...
Closing time on my semester abroad
Hey hey! For being the last time I’m taking y’all along with me abroad this semester, this article is definitely going to be an interesting one, solely owing to the fact that I recently spent 8 hours in a hospital here in Spain. How did I end up in the hospital, some may ask. Well, it turns out that falling on the street and hitting your head hard enough for a bump to start forming will immediately get you a one way ticket to the emergency room.
Roaming around Rome: post midterms
Hey hey! The last time that we caught up I was headed into the peak of midterms here in Granada and had a trip to Rome planned, and I’m happy to report that all went well (I think)! I had midterms for my religion and government classes, and was a bit more nervous for the religion midterm than for government. I haven’t gotten grades back for either of them yet, but I walked out of both of them feeling good about them.
When Prestige Costs Lives: the University's Choice to Protect Profits Over Ethics
I didn’t learn about the University’s complicity in genocide in Palestine from a press release or a seminar. I learned it walking past tents in Brunswick Park, reading the slogans on the archway splashed in red paint, and hearing the chants outside Whitworth Hall.
Strategies: Playa Bowls founder shares how authenticity fueled growth from Jersey Shore cart to 300+ locations - The Business Journals
The founder of Playa Bowls explains what allowed the brand to expand while maintaining the creative energy that launched it.
Midterm season is upon us (in Spain!)
Hey hey! We’re about halfway through our semester here in Granada, and midterm season is upon us. It’s a little daunting thinking about having to take midterm exams in another language, but I think that as long as I know the material, I’ll be fine. I had my midterm exam for my Spanish class earlier this week, and I was super nervous going into it. I knew that I had done everything that I could have to prepare, so I was hoping that it was enough.
Changes of Scenery
Hey hey! We’re now a month into classes here in Granada. I’ve changed housing, traveled to two different cities in Spain and plan to travel to another one soon, so we have a lot to catch up on. The biggest thing that I think I need to explain is my housing change, going from a homestay with a family to a residence hall with other IES and University of Granada students. I was really sad to say goodbye to living with my family, but it was a decision that was best for me.
Classes have Officially Started- in Spain!
Hey hey! I’m back again for my second article bringing y’all along to my semester abroad in Spain, and boy is this one a doozy. I officially had my first crash out of the semester, and classes had not even started yet. No amount of warnings can prepare you, in my opinion, to study abroad in a different country and adapt to the culture and language; this can sometimes get overwhelming.
Come to Granada with me!
Hey, hey! For those of you who might not know me, I’m Abby, one of the staff writers for the Old Gold and Black, and I’m currently studying abroad this semester in Granada, Spain. Now, typically staffers for the OG&B wouldn’t be working during their time abroad, but I thought it would be a fun idea to bring y’all along with me a little during this semester away from Wofford. Study abroad rarely goes completely smoothly for anyone, and I ran into some trouble before I even left the United States.
“Conclave”: The fictional version of choosing a new pope
The Catholic Church has long been the epicenter of many peoples Christian faith around the world. Heading the Catholic Church is the Pope, and with the recent death of Pope Francis, many are left interested in how a new Pope is chosen when a Pope dies or retires. Academy award nominated thriller, “Conclave,” was released just this past year in 2024. Though it received amazing reviews from critics while still in theaters, it skyrocketed in views since Pope Francis’ death on April 21.
From international scholar to business and finance professor
Every year, Wofford announces a Presidential International scholar, and for the 2005-06 school year, the scholarship went to then student Russ Sandifer ‘07, now an assistant professor of business and finance here at Wofford. Sandifer got a call from former President Ben Dunlap’s office in the spring of 2005, with no real agenda given to him for the meeting. His friends had a sneaking suspicion that the meeting could potentially be an interview for the Presidential International scholarship.
Reclaiming what was stolen: The revival of Gaeilge
For most people, St. Patrick’s Day means pints of Guinness and a splash of green. But beneath the shamrocks and the hangovers, something deeper is awakening. Gaeilge, the Irish language, is finding its voice again. For too long, it’s been dismissed as a ‘dead’ language, abandoned like Latin or Old English. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Irish isn’t dead—it was silenced and suppressed. But it’s never gone away. And now, it’s fighting its way back.
Baseball’s Exciting Season
Watching baseball has long been the passtime for many Americans, with a plethora of teams ranging from the rookie league at the bottom of the minor leagues all the way up to the major leagues. Spartanburg will soon welcome a professional team of their own, the Hub City Spartanburgers, in the new downtown baseball field, Fifth Third Park; the first game will take place on April 15. The first game will not belong to the Spartanburgers, however.
Kevin Dempsey: new head coach for women’s soccer
With a long history of coaching under his belt, Kevin Dempsey was announced to be the new head coach for Wofford’s women’s soccer team. The announcement brings a new excitement and energy to the team. Originally, Dempsey was set on becoming a high school teacher and soccer coach. After realizing that teaching wouldn’t bring the same joys as primarily coaching, however, Dempsey decided to take the plunge and focus on coaching collegiate soccer.
Turning back the time; the global erosion of women's freedoms
Words by Abby Taylor For women, the fight for equality is never an abstract issue—it is a deeply personal, often painful, battle. When we talk about women’s rights, we are talking about interrupted lives, denied freedoms, and delayed dreams. Whether it is in the streets of Fallowfield, where women fear for their safety, or in Kabul, where the Taliban has stolen the most basic rights from millions of women, the reality is clear. The struggle for women’s rights is far from over.
The competitive internship: Avery Fields’ internship with JP Morgan Chase
Many Wofford students decide to work internships during their summer breaks, and for Avery Fields ‘26, getting an internship for the summer of 2025 was a given. A finance and Chinese double major, Fields wanted an internship that could give her more direction as to what she might want to do after graduation. While looking at internships, she found a commercial banking summer internship with JP Morgan Chase out of their Houston offices.
The Transition to Workday
At the beginning of the semester, student workers saw a change in how they logged hours for their jobs. Instead of submitting their timesheets physically or through a spreadsheet, they were now logging hours through a software called Workday.
The Wrongful Conviction of Kristine Bunch
Oct. 2., 2024, was International Wrongful Conviction Day, which is a day to help raise awareness to the issue of wrongful convictions. The event was canceled due to hurricane Helene, but Bunch sat down with us in an exclusive interview. The South Carolina Innocence Initiative, also known as SCII,, planned an event with Kristine Bunch, an exoneree, to help raise awareness of this issue. SCII is led by its president, Olivia Cianciolo, ‘25, and Dawn McQuiston, professor of Psychology.

Sweet Suite! Unique Tent Design Gives Strong Results
Pre-bent poles give this semi-freestanding tent more space without the extra weight. After cycling with and sleeping in Sierra Design’s Sweet Suite 2 tent from Colorado to Washington, I can say it’s pretty—ah-hem—sweet. Unique design creates a taller frame without bulky poles, and dual vestibules can store a ton of gear. Hitting shelves early 2018, the Sweet Suite 2- and 3-person tents aim for the sweet-spot between lightweight and livable.
