Molecular bases of insect odorant receptor function: specificity and evolution
I. INTRODUCTION At the interface between an insect and its environment, olfaction is crucial for reproduction, host selection, avoidance of danger, communication with conspecifics, and other important behaviours. Thus, this chemical sense plays an essential role in the adaptation of species to their environment as well as in the speciation process. At the periphery, odorants are primarily detected by 7-transmembrane domain proteins called odorant receptors (ORs).
