Mia Mai Symonds: A Life of its Own — Corridor8
Since launching in September 2019, BLANK_ has serviced Leeds-based artists and designers by providing an important space where smaller-scale projects, including work in progress, can meet their public. It does this in ways that are free from the higher-stakes publicity, audience engagement strategies and footfall expectations that occupy the region’s major art institutions. In that, it’s exactly the kind of experimental space that any creative community requires. Leeds needs more of them.
Digital Vapour Trails: Ronnie Danaher in profile — Corridor8
Technology can be overstimulating, data can be oversensitive, and the internet can be overwhelming. The immersive nature of digital technologies can be seen throughout society and by how much our lives revolve around ‘platforms’, ‘devices’, media and our online presence.
People Powered: Stories from the River Tees — Corridor8
People Powered: Stories from the River Tees is unlike most exhibitions for the way it directly incorporates its audience, so that not just artefacts, photographs and paintings are included here but the local community itself. In Chris Davies’ ‘49 Bridges’ (2023), the photographer celebrates the interconnectivity of the architectural form and the River Tees through the ages.
Robert Indiana: Sculpture 1958-2018 — Corridor8
The intermittent flashing of a multitude of light bulbs spelling out ‘LOVE’ both introduces and summarises the Robert Indiana retrospective at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. This aluminium version, ‘The Electric LOVE’ (1966-2000) stands about head height, with red and blue exterior sections and a bright white interior littered with lightbulbs.
YSI artist spotlight: Claye Bowler and Nwando Ebizie — Corridor8
10.11.2021 — Interview by Hatty Nestor Sculpture is often defined as three-dimensional objects and structures, but it can also reference sound and non-material artwork, and the multitudinous ways that art can transform and reimagine. It is in this spirit that Yorkshire Sculpture International (YSI) brings together diverse narratives around gender, lived experience and meaning making.
YSI 2021: A summer of sculpture — Corridor8
14.10.2021 — Review by Abi Mitchell Akeelah Bertram, 'Return', 2021. Photo by Jonty Wilde. After launching with a sprawling 100-day festival in 2019, Yorkshire Sculpture International (YSI) has been working to cement Yorkshire as the home of sculpture in the UK. The organisation is a unique partnership between four major institutions across Leeds and Wakefield: Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
RIPE - Corridor8
Price: £7.00 Dims: 25 x 35 cm Please Select Your Postal Region RIPE is a collection of essays produced during Corridor8’s first residency programme, in partnership with The Tetley in Leeds and broadly responding to two exhibitions that ran concurrently between 22 July and 9 October 2016: Polyculture, a solo show of recent work by artist Jonathan Trayte exploring food production and capitalist consumerism; and Lovers and Romances, a retrospective look at the censorship trial sparked by an...
A new gallery for Leeds. BLANK_ opens with Rhian Cooke: Divide by Two — Corridor8
17.10.2019 — Review by Abi Mitchell Installation photograph of Rhian Cooke, Divide by Two, BLANK_, 19 September - 25 October 2019. Putting your best foot forward. A daunting task if you don’t know where your journey will take you and perhaps in which direction to even make a start. We certainly don’t have to follow in each other’s footsteps, but it’s a comforting and supportive way to get those first steps underway.
Senga Nengudi - Corridor8
Senga Nengudi, a key figure in the avant-garde scenes of the 1960s and 1970s and who is known for her radical experiments in sculpture using non-traditional materials, has been a pioneering artist in the US for over fifty years. This recently opened solo exhibition at the Henry Moore Institute is the first institutional presentation of her work outside the United States, bringing together a concise yet comprehensive overview of her career from the 1960s to the present day.
Bloc Projects Members Show 2018 — Corridor8
Sheffield may be well known these days for its consistent annual student satisfaction and its rejuvenation of the infamous post-industrial Park Hill estate, but many would not guess that it hosts a modest and thriving art scene, as such, Bloc Projects is one of these destinations for the ‘artist-led’ acolyte.
Machines will watch us die — Corridor8
It is assumed that people have a fetishised fascination with digital technology and its ethereal nature; everything immaterial though not irrelevant. However considering all the advertising posters and people flaunting ‘devices’ on the train I came across on my way to the Holden Gallery it is more likely that digital technology is as tied to material goods as we have ever been, the status symbol combined with a sense of ownership and community.
Adcredo: The Deep Belief Network by Joey Holder — Corridor8
Joey Holder is an artist with multiple websites, multiple research strands and multiple digital personas; the connecting factor seemingly being the disparate connecting force of the world wide web. At Bloc Projects, the solo exhibition Adcredo shouts a hyper-aware force dissecting, explaining and complicating the relationship to our inherent belief systems. A super-sized research mind map in the form of an explosion library is pasted across the white entrance walls by way of greeting.
Mother River: Yan Wang Preston — Corridor8
Invited to take part in a modern day adventure I visited Impressions Gallery, Bradford, to take in Mother River, an exhibition of photographs by artist Yan Wang Preston. Labelled as an ‘epic journey’ the photographic project details the 6,211km route of the Yangtze River in China, from its remote birth at the source near Tibet to its joining with the sea at Shanghai.
