Yorkshire Contemporary, the Leeds-based arts organisation, has in past lives existed as The Tetley (2013-2023) and Project Space Leeds (2006-2012). Alongside co-curating the 2025 Turner Prize, Curator Michael Raymond and Assistant Curator Sophie Bullen have been spearheading a year-long artist development project, Practice: Leeds, part of the organisation’s wider Practice programme.

I’m on my way to artist-led space BasementArtsProject, which has been in residence in the basement of Bruce Davies’ terraced home for the past fifteen years. I’m here to see Ethereal Matter, a group show that brings together work by nine students on the MA Fine Art course at Leeds Beckett University.

Since launching in September 2019, BLANK_ has serviced Leeds-based artists and designers by providing an important space where smaller-scale projects, including work in progress, can meet their public. It does this in ways that are free from the higher-stakes publicity, audience engagement strategies and footfall expectations that occupy the region’s major art institutions. In that, it’s exactly the kind of experimental space that any creative community requires. Leeds needs more of them.
