How to Have the Courage to Go Big With Your Prayers
Over the past couple of years, I’ve come to realize just how much my thoughts, beliefs and actions affect my prayer life, and just how often I limit God in my prayers because of my thoughts, beliefs and actions. The way I think and what I believe about God and myself will determine not only how I live but also how I pray.
How to Know If Your Calling Is Really from God
I used to dread questions like, “Have you found your calling yet?” or “What’s your calling in life?”because I felt like a failure for having to answer, “I’m not sure.”As an older teen and college student, I felt so much pressure to figure out what God wanted me to do with the rest of my life.It seemed everyone expected me to have my entire life mapped out before college graduation.

Should Christians Get Married to Have Sex?
I knew a girl in college who had recently gotten married. She was pretty young at the time, just barely out of her teens. But, according to her, she had met the love of her life. They hadn’t been dating for very long, but the chemistry between them was out of this world, she said. They just had to get married because they were burning with passion. In fact, now that they were married—they were having crazy, hot sex several times a day.
Everything Wrong With John MacArthur's Attack on Racial Reconciliation
John Fullerton MacArthur, Jr. is one of the biggest names in evangelical Christianity. He’s the founder of Grace to You ministries, the president of The Master’s University and the teaching pastor of Grace Community Church. His Calvinist and Cessationist apologetics have been driving theological forces throughout the evangelical world, and his millions of study Bibles and other books sold inform the consciousness of Christians across the world.
Report: Willow Creek Paid $3.25 Million in Settlements Related to Child Sex Abuse By a Volunteer at the Church
The Chicago Tribune has uncovered court documents that show that Willow Creek Community Church paid more than $3.25 million to settle lawsuits after a church volunteer sexually abused two developmentally disable children at the church. Robert Sobczak Jr., the former volunteer, is currently in prison.
Where Shame Loses Its Power
Two pink lines. When my husband and I saw them, we imagined all of our plans and dreams fading away. First came anger and then, swiftly, relentlessly: shame. To others, our situation looked ideal. We were young, relatively healthy, and my husband had a steady job with full benefits. And we had wanted children. Just not yet. Who could we talk to? We recoiled from Church, feeling isolated by our lack of joy.
The Most Misused Verse in the Bible
Editor’s note: This week, we’re taking a look at some of the "Best of RELEVANTMagazine.com" from 2010. This article was so widely read when it was first posted that it took us by surprise. And the comments stayed pretty insightful.
Saddleback Church Has Now Baptized 50,000 People
This weekend, Saddleback Church pastor Rick Warren announced a major milestone: They’ve become the first church to baptize 50,000 people. In a Facebook post, Warren wrote, “This weekend, we will soar past another historic milestone as we baptize the 50,000th person baptized into the Body of Christ at Saddleback Church. Imagine all the amazing personal stories of changed lives behind that number! 50,000 individual lives transformed by Jesus since Saddleback Church began.
Should John Piper Have Changed the Words to ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’ ?
Recently, writer and preacher John Piper spoke at a Gospel Coalition conference, and the worship team there decided that the classic hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” would be a good choice to follow his remarks. However, Piper decided to make some changes to the classic song. He told TGC, “I heard [TGC] intended to close with that hymn. That’s a great hymn. I love it. But it did not hit the nail of my message on the head.
How to Stop Limiting God in Your Prayers
Over the past couple of years, I’ve come to realize just how much my thoughts, beliefs and actions affect my prayer life, and just how often I limit God in my prayers because of my thoughts, beliefs and actions. The way I think and what I believe about God and myself will determine not only how I live but also how I pray.
5 (More) Unbiblical Statements Christians Believe
About three years ago, I wrote an article titled “9 Unbiblical Statements That Christians Believe,” and it really struck a nerve with people. Many Christian online publications picked it up to share with their audiences, and it was one of the “most read articles of the year” on several of those sites.
Study: Theology Is the Top Reason Churchgoers Stay or Leave Their Church
LifeWay Research recently released new research showing that churchgoers really care about the doctrines of their faith communities. According to the study, churchgoers who participated indicated a much higher tolerance for change in music or preaching style than doctrine. “Mess with the music and people may grumble. Mess with theology and they’re out the door,” explained Scott McConnell, executive director of LifeWay Research (h/t: Christianity Today). The numbers are a bit counterintuitive.
Why Gratitude Is a Spiritual Discipline
It’s almost unbelievable that Jesus heals 10 lepers in Luke 17 simultaneously. Without fanfare, He simply commands the motley crew, “Go, show yourselves to the priest.” They exit stage-left and their skin is restored. Jesus certainly missed an opportunity there to make a big, impressive scene. The Lord was never concerned with aggrandizement. What was unbelievable to Him, however, was the lack of thankfulness from the former lepers. Only one makes a U-turn to thank Him for His tremendous miracle.
Report: Americans Aren't Saving Money Because They 'Haven't Gotten Around to It'
Unemployment rates are down, the stock market is generally doing well, but Americans still aren’t saving money. According to a Bankrate survey conducted in June, 19 percent of Americans have absolutely nothing in their savings accounts, and they aren’t planning to start saving anytime soon.
How a Muralist Is Fighting Gentrification Through His Art
Public art in Los Angeles had been banned for more than 10 years until 2013, when the lift inspired muralists like Clinton Bopp to retake the streets and use their paintings to communicate the conflicts and struggles they see in their environments. Bopp uses his murals to depict the cause and effect of gentrification in Los Angeles.
The 7 Deadly Sins of Insecure People
As a culture, we make every effort possible and spend billions of dollars in our attempts to be “secure.” There are alarms on our houses and cars. There are locks on just about everything. People live in gated communities with security guards armed with guns, or at least armed with a walkie-talkie so they can call people who have guns. We want our borders secure. There are filters on our water faucets, refrigerators and air conditioning units.
Austin Channing Brown
Austin Channing Brown defines activist. With over a decade of studying and writing on racial identity, Austin bravely and truthfully talks about race, pain, systemic inequality, the Church and racial reconciliation. This week, Austin challenges Eddie with her thoughts behind her new book, I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness and how we all work together to change the world.
Why You Shouldn't Place All of Your Expectations on God
There are some things we can always expect from God, but there are some expectations that we place on Him, and that’s where the “danger” lies. When we place our own expectations on God and those expectations aren’t met or they’re met in a way we didn’t imagine, we become upset, frustrated and even angry. At that point, it’s very difficult for us to see how God is blessing and providing for us because all we can see are our unmet expectations. We can expect Him to remain true to His character.
Why Churches Need to Talk About Suicide
Editor’s note: This interview first ran in 2015. Almost 10 years ago, Jamie Tworkowski launched To Write Love on Her Arms to offer hope to those struggling with addiction, depression, self injury and suicidal thoughts. Since then, the culture at-large appears more open to talking about depression and suicide. But suicide is still a big problem—in fact, it’s the second leading cause of death among college students.
9 ‘Mistakes’ Every 20something Is Allowed to Make
I’m well into my twenties now, which means I’m all too familiar with the pressure to have life figured out. Family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and acquaintances from high school we stalk on Facebook all press us with the idea that we’ve got little margin for error in our twenties—that life should play out like a clear-cut script. But with each new year, I’m learning this is nothing but a flat out lie. Truth is, no one has life figured out in their 20s.
What to Say When Your Friend Struggles with Anorexia
There was a time in my life where, despite having a BMI below 15, I was completely convinced that I was too fat. My mind would wander to thoughts about food and weight the moment something else was not distracting me. I was obsessed with being thin and attaining my definition of perfection. Throughout my battle with anorexia nervosa, I continued to go to church. Many friends at church were aware of my struggle.
A Guide to Living With Roommates and Not Going Crazy
I’ve lived with over a hundred women. No, I’m not the worst roommate who sends others running for the hills, nor do I move frequently. I’m actually a fairly normal 20-something. I lived in a sorority house for two years in college, and then shared a house with four of the same sorority sisters. Right after I graduated, I moved into an apartment with two roommates. They were both engaged within a year, so two new women moved in. I now live in an adorable bungalow with three other friends.
