What was your first job as a journalist?

First full-time job was assistant editor at The Lane Report in Lexington, Kentucky. Freelance work included a lot of golf & business writing.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, learned to type on it in high school in the early 1980s

How is social media changing news?

It's not. Events still occur and data still accumulate the same way. Social media is just new channels; due diligence still required.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

All my favorites are real.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means keeping track of, documenting and, occasionally, uncovering or discovering truths and facts.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

haven't seen one that I remember

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

by email, with background documents

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Mac laptop, iMac 27-inch production desktop (InDesign, etc.), phone, email, social media, my brain

Who do you wish followed you?

corporate decision-makers with global location decision-making responsibilities

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I know how to write ... and being a poet doesn't pay.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Poetry editor, literary mag; caught a plagiarist cuz I'd just read the Blake poem he copied in a book I was reading abt Naropa Institute.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Ask stupid questions. Keep asking. Find one more source. Learn to transcribe so you don't have to record. Inject some poetry where you can.

None stand out particularly.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Several pitches have asked me to report on subject matter we'd already covered.

What's your favorite drink?

Zinfandel

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

With my family. Walking the dog. At the Y. On the tennis court. Reading. Watching movies.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That we write about commercial real estate. We write about global corporate location decision-making for facility investments.
