Millions Have Lost Their Right to Vote. Could Trump Join Them?
As the “hush money” trial of former President Donald Trump wraps up and the jury prepares to begin its deliberations, Americans face the possibility, for the first time in our history, that a major party candidate for president could be convicted of criminal charges. This prospect could lead to an unprecedented situation: that a conviction on just one of the 34 charges Trump currently faces leaves him eligible to continue running for president but unable to vote for himself in his own election.
In Alabama, Voters and Nonpartisan Civic Engagement Groups Deserve a Voice
Our democracy works best when every voter can participate, and civic engagement groups help make that possible by helping more people engage in our democracy and assisting those who need it. But Alabamians are now confronted with a new law that restricts their ability to help their neighbors vote and make their voices heard. On March 20, 2024, Alabama enacted a law, SB 1, that would impose significant consequences for anyone who assists voters in the absentee ballot application process.
Congress Should Pass Bipartisan Bills to Safeguard Elections from AI
As the 2024 election rapidly approaches, the risk that artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to deceive voters or manipulate our democratic process continues to grow. Thankfully, there are promising signs in Congress for a bipartisan path to safeguard elections from the emerging threat this technology presents. AI is a game-changer due to its unprecedented ability to create realistic false content.
Is Voter Intimidation Illegal? What Should I Do If I Experience It?
Many voters continue to be concerned about the possibility of encountering voter intimidation at the polls, in their mailboxes and even at their own doorsteps. In recent years, bad actors have intimidated voters by distributing false information or asking voters invasive and illegal questions about their registration status. But you should not be scared from voting.
How much of an app can you really build with AI?
Adam from Buzzy here. We’re tinkering with the future of web and native app creation, making it accessible to everyone. Human imagination has always been ahead of the curve: In 1968, the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” revolutionized AI depiction with the iconic and unsettling HAL 9000, challenging human-machine boundaries. AI’s current gig? Revolutionizing app development — making it not just faster and more affordable, but also within reach for more people.
Arizona’s Latino, Native Voters Score Voting Rights Win
Free and fair elections rely on every voter having the ability to access the ballot box. A federal judge in Arizona just reaffirmed that principle, striking down provisions of two Arizona laws, H.B. 2492 and H.B. 2243, passed in 2022 that severely restricted the ability of Arizonans — particularly Latino and Native Arizonans — from exercising their freedom to vote.
Why America Needs the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
March 7th marks the anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday,’ when Black civil rights champions led by John Lewis, who later served in Congress for 33 years, were violently assaulted by law enforcement while marching for voting rights across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, AL.
The Gerrymander Has Been Slayed: Wisconsinites Get Fair Maps for 2024 Election
For more than a decade, Wisconsinites suffered under unfair and unconstitutional state legislative maps that essentially guaranteed one-party control of the Legislature — one of the most egregious gerrymanders in the country. Now, the gerrymander is no more. On February 19, 2024, Wisconsin Gov.

Electoral Count Reform Act Makes It Harder to Undermine Presidential Elections
Last week, Rep. Mike Johnson — a “key architect of Republicans’ objections to certifying Mr. Biden’s victory on Jan. 6,” according to the New York Times — was elected speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. It’s important to understand that our elections are safe, secure and accurate.
States Should Protect Everyday Americans Who Safeguard Our Democracy
Everyday Americans keep our elections fair — and they take this responsibility seriously. In recent years, however, individuals who have spent their careers safeguarding the electoral process are facing unprecedented levels of harassment and are leaving the profession in droves. A recent poll reveals a high rate of turnover among election workers, equivalent to approximately one to two election workers quitting each day since the 2020 election.
Black and Latino Voters Win Fair Maps in Galveston County, Texas
We can't have a fair and inclusive democracy unless all voters have an equal voice. Black and Latino voters in Galveston County, Texas have long been denied a voice in county government – an unjust reality considering those groups comprise nearly half of the county’s population.
Supreme Court’s Impact on Voting Rights Is a Threat to Democracy
This piece originally ran as an op-ed in Bloomberg Law on September 27, 2023. Alabama legislators openly defied the federal government when it came to silencing Black voices by blatantly flaunting the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision in Allen v. Milligan, which required Alabama to draw fair congressional maps. Yesterday, the Supreme Court stopped them in their tracks.
CLC, Local Partners Score Voting Rights Victory in Arizona
Our democracy works best when every voter can participate. Yet Arizona, in 2022, passed two anti-voter laws, H.B. 2492 and H.B. 2243, that undermined Arizonans’ access to the ballot box. These laws, effective since January 1, 2023, severely restricted the ability of Arizonans—particularly Latino and Native Arizonans—from exercising their freedom to vote.
Congress Has Another Chance to Restore the Voting Rights Act
Nearly 60 years ago, Congress enacted the Voting Rights Act (VRA) to prohibit racial discrimination in voting and ensure all voters can have an equal voice in our elections. Unfortunately, in recent years, the Supreme Court has gutted the VRA and drastically weakened its once-successful protections for Black and brown voters – a situation Congress has repeatedly failed to fix despite having the ability do so. Today, Congress gets another chance.
Defending Nonpartisan Civic Engagement Groups Strengthens the Freedom to Vote
Nonpartisan civic engagement groups form the bedrock of our democracy. These groups—composed of civic-minded, democracy-loving, everyday Americans—do the hard work of fighting to ensure that every American can access the fundamental freedom to vote. Their efforts have a long and storied history.
Protecting Women’s Freedom to Vote Creates an Inclusive Democracy for All
One hundred and three years ago, after decades of activism, the Nineteenth Amendment granted some women in the United States the freedom to vote. This event marked an enormous step toward a more inclusive and representative democracy. However, it took decades for all women to have the freedom to vote.
Protecting Mail-In Voting in North Dakota (Splonskowski v. White)
North Dakota law requires absentee and mail ballots to be postmarked by the day before Election Day. These ballots are then counted when they are received by election officials in the thirteen days between Election Day and the meeting of the Canvassing Board. North Dakota is one of several states that requires ballots received before the vote canvassing deadline to be counted so long as they were cast before Election Day.
CLC, LWVND Fight Back Against Attack on North Dakota Voters
In our democracy every voice must be heard, and that means we must count every vote. Today, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) joined the League of Women Voters of North Dakota (LWVND) in fighting back against an attack on North Dakotans’ freedom to vote. Last month, the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Burleigh County Auditor to prevent North Dakota election officials from counting mail-in ballots that are mailed before, but received after, Election Day.
Victory: Virginia Beach Adopts Fair Districts After CLC Successfully Sued City
In a victory for voters and democracy, the Virginia Beach City Council voted last night to adopt a “10-1” election system and a court-approved district map that ensures all voters in Virginia Beach will have an equal voice in local elections. This victory marks the culmination of years of litigation against Virginia Beach’s at-large system of elections, in place since 1966, which Campaign Legal Center (CLC) successfully proved was in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
Victory! Yakima Valley's Latino Voters Will Have an Equal Voice in Our Democracy
It’s a fundamental principle of our democracy: Every voice should be heard and every vote should count equally. But for decades, Latino voters in Washington state’s Yakima Valley region were denied an equal voice in Washington’s state legislature by maps that unfairly diluted their voices.
Congress Must Act to Make Our Democracy More Secure, Accessible and Transparent
The 2024 election cycle may be one of the most contentious ever, which is why it is imperative that voters feel confident in the health and security of our democracy. Congress can help realize this goal by passing the reintroduced Freedom to Vote Act as soon as possible.
Why a recent ruling is good news for Florida's civic engagement groups
The work of nonpartisan civic engagement groups like the League of Women Voters of Florida (LWVFL) is a core part of building a better democracy from the ground up. These groups register voters, hold community educational events and promote civic engagement—yet their efforts have come under increasing attack by self-interested politicians, with the latest affront coming in Florida’s Senate Bill 7050 (SB 7050).
Victory: Supreme Court Rejects Voting Map That Drowns Out Black Voices
When Black and brown voters are forced to vote under discriminatory electoral maps, they have fewer opportunities to make their voices heard on the issues that matter most to them and elect representatives who reflect their values and will fight for their communities. Thankfully, in a landmark decision that is a major victory for fair maps and the freedom to vote, the Supreme Court in Allen v. Milligan (formerly Merrill v.
Why the Mass Exodus from ERIC is Bad for our Democracy
One thing all Americans can agree upon — no matter their political persuasion — is that our elections should be safe and secure. For the past decade, it has been the mission of the Electronic Registration Information Center, commonly known as ERIC, to ensure just that.
Election Workers Deserve to Feel Safe. Nevada is Taking Action
Following an exodus of election workers after an increase in threats, harassment, doxxing and stalking, Nevada has become the latest state to sign into law a bill that protects the everyday Americans who help keep our democracy safe and secure. Notably, this legislation garnered unanimous support in both chambers, a monumental feat in a state with divided political control. This bill plainly proves that protecting those who administer our elections is not, and should not, be a partisan issue.
What Is ERIC, and Why Is It Critical for Our Democracy?
One thing all Americans can agree upon — no matter their political persuasion — is that our elections should be safe and secure. For the past decade, it has been the mission of the Electronic Registration Information Center, commonly known as ERIC, to ensure just that.
Florida’s Effort to Restrict and Penalize Nonpartisan Civic Engagement Groups is Undemocratic
As long as America has had representative democracy, civic-minded folks have worked tirelessly to ensure their neighbors could access it—registering people to vote, holding voter education events and promoting civic engagement. Nonpartisan civic engagement groups, composed of civic-minded Americans, have long been a central pillar in our American civic tradition.
Campaign Legal Center Updates Restore Your Vote Tool for Adaptable Use
In 2018, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) built RestoreYourVote.org and RecupereSuVoto.org, a first-of-its-kind tool to help Americans who have been impacted by the criminal legal system understand their voting rights.
States are Making it Harder for Ballot Initiatives to Pass
Over the past few years, attacks on our democracy—from extreme gerrymandering to January 6 to the dozens of anti-voter bills passed at the statewide level—have been marked by a common theme: a pernicious desire to silence voters’ voices and subvert the will of the people.
League of Women Voters of Florida Education Fund v. Ashley Moody
About this Case On May 24, 2023, Florida enacted a new law imposing some of the nation’s most stringent restrictions on voter registration activities. The law imposes unprecedented civil and criminal penalties on groups that might violate one of many burdensome restrictions while collecting and submitting voter registration forms. These include: Severe civil and criminal penalties for retaining a voter registration applicant’s “personal information,” even with the consent of that applicant.
Virtual Event VIDEO: Rights Restoration and the Criminalization of Voting
Campaign Legal Center's virtual event, "Rights Restoration and the Criminalization of Voting" was held on May 8, 2023 and featured a panelist discussion on the issue of felony disenfranchisement. Over 5 million Americans are currently silenced in our democracy because of a past felony conviction. This level of disenfranchisement is a product of legislation enacted during the Reconstruction period which intentionally sought to strip Black Americans of their newfound freedom.
Kansas Anti-Voter Law Targeting Civic Engagement Groups Struck Down
Nonpartisan civic engagement groups, which assist citizens in their efforts to engage with the political process, have long played a vital role in our democracy. Yet their endeavors are increasingly coming under attack by state legislatures across the country.
Louisiana’s Inequitable Felony Disenfranchisement Scheme Hurts Black Voters and Democracy
The right to vote is a basic American freedom—and when that freedom is abridged, our democracy suffers. This week, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) joined forces with local advocacy groups to fight back against barriers blocking the right to vote, filing a lawsuit challenging part of Louisiana’s felony disenfranchisement scheme. We can’t have an inclusive and accountable democracy when voters must jump through hoops just to exercise their fundamental freedom to vote.
North Carolina Decisions a Clear Step Back for Democracy
Last week, the North Carolina Supreme Court issued a trio of disappointing decisions rolling back fundamental protections against partisan gerrymandering, revoking voting rights for individuals with a felony conviction and reinstating a racially discriminatory voter ID requirement. Make no mistake, these decisions are a huge step back for democracy. In a healthy democracy, voters choose their politicians – not the other way around. Yet the court’s decision in Harper v.

Voting and Elections
CLC fights in court anti-voter laws that target Black voters, voters of color, and voters with disabilities. CLC advocates to restore voting rights for Americans with past felony convictions, and advocates for state and federal policies that improve and protect in-person voting access and voter registration.
Congress Takes Historic Action to Update the Electoral Count Act
In a major victory for democracy, Congress passed the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 (ECRA). This vital legislation will update the Electoral Count Act of 1887 (ECA), an archaic law that provides the primary legal framework for casting and counting Electoral College votes in presidential elections. Congressional passage of the ECRA is crucial and timely.
CLC’s Restore Your Vote Toolkit Cited As Key Resource in DOJ Guide
In a positive step forward for helping people with past felony convictions exercise their freedom to vote, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has released a “Guide to State Voting Rules that Apply After Criminal Convictions.” This guide draws upon, and links to, Campaign Legal Center’s (CLC) Restore Your Vote toolkit to provide information to people with prior felony convictions, and the organizations that work with them, that makes it easier to navigate the rights restoration process using...

Campaign Legal Center (CLC) hosted the event, “How Do We Keep Partisan Politics Out of Election Administration?” on Dec. 13, 2021 about how to leave partisan politics out of post-election processes. During the event, the panelists discussed how transparency, truth and bipartisan cooperation are essential.
Hoyas continues to gel; rout Siena - The Georgetown Voice
Sports Coming off their first win of the season against American University, the Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team (2-1, Big East), topped the Siena Saints (0-4, MAAC) 83-65 Friday night in a wire-to-wire victory. Led by the scorching shooting of senior transfer forward Kaiden Rice (23 points, 7-10 from three point range) and graduate guard Don Carey (20 points, 7-9 from the field), the Hoyas never relinquished the lead and fended off a Saints second-half comeback attempt.
Poll: 57% of Republicans Support Independent Redistricting Commissions
A new poll commissioned by the right-leaning R Street Institute found that 57% of Republican voters support independent redistricting commissions (IRC). With a strong majority of polled Republican voters supporting IRCs, this new finding reinforces the fact that public opposition to politician control over the redistricting process is bipartisan. In fact, only 31% of Americans surveyed in the R Street poll approve of the way their state draws congressional and legislative boundaries.
Restore Your Vote Showed Me the Way to Rights Restoration in Tennessee
The author, Marquibe Smith, 44, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, works at a Nissan car factory. My name is Marquibe Smith. I was convicted of a drug crime in Louisiana back in 1998. Louisiana is a state that marginalizes people and uses the criminal justice system to keep them down. I currently live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and have lived in the state since 2005. I work at a car factory for Nissan until 11 p.m. each night.
A Wish for My Daughter on the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment
I’m sure I had vaguely understood what feminism was in high school. But it wasn’t until I got to college that I started hearing murmurs that women could do anything. What a strange thing to say, I thought. I attended an all-girls high school, so whenever someone won an award for being the best at something, it was a girl—fastest runner, highest jumper, strongest gymnast, or smartest student—they were all girls.
Why ranked-choice voting is like the Iowa caucuses — but an even better way to choose
"The Iowa caucuses are always held between seven and 10 p.m. on a weekday in the middle of winter," writes Adam Ginsburg. Ginsburg is a second-year student at Georgetown University and an intern at FairVote, a nonpartisan group advocating mainly for ranked-choice voting but also the creation of multi-member legislative districts. Every four years Americans refocus their collective attention on the lovable wackiness of Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential voting.
CNN Should Have Asked About Ranked-Choice Voting. It’s Not Too Late.
RCV would ensure that the crowded primary field ultimately produces a nominee with true majority support. The second round of Democratic presidential debates continues tonight in Detroit. We at FairVote certainly hope that CNN’s moderators ask the 10 candidates on stage this evening about electoral reform and ranked choice voting (RCV).
Public's 'Caesar': A Cautionary Tale, Not a Call for Trump Takedown - Bold
Artistic expression, a common proxy battlefield of partisan passion, is once again the center of a conflict that threatens to tear civil discourse asunder.
The Trail of Broken Promises: How to Right a Historical Wrong - Bold
It’s a landscape of beautiful desolation. Grasslands stretch to the horizon, the golden tedium broken only by the scattered clusters of trailer homes. If you squint, distant trees appear as flecks of green paint, a reminder of the sacred lands the Oglala Lakota used to roam. Here, along with the bodies of warriors long dead, lies the residue of the darkest chapter in American history.
