Copper depletion boosts CNS leukemia therapy by inhibiting nucleotide synthesis through impairment of mitochondrial complex IV activity
Abstract The nutrient-sparse cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) poses a major challenge to spreading cancer cells. Despite this challenge, leukemia cells spread to the CSF, requiring aggressive central nervous system (CNS)-directed treatment that can lead to neurotoxicity. Here we used a targeted in vivo CRISPR screen to identify nutritional dependencies of systemic and CNS acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

NADH Ties One-Carbon Metabolism to Cellular Respiration
In this issue of Cell Metabolism, Yang et al., 2020 Yang L. Canaveras J.C.G. Chen Z. Wang L. Liang L. Jang C. Mayr J.A. Zhang Z. Ghergurovich J.M. Zhan L. et al. Serine catabolism feeds NADH when respiration is impaired. Cell Metab. 2020; 31 ( ) : 809-821 report that serine is a source of mitochondrial NADH derived from one-carbon metabolism. Serine becomes a major source of NADH when cellular respiration is inhibited, and the un-utilized, accumulated NADH inhibits the TCA cycle and slows proliferation.

Educause Security Discussion: Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: [SECURITY] Next Gen Antivirus
Educause Security Discussion mailing list archives Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: [SECURITY] Next Gen Antivirus / Endpoint Protection Solutions From: Adam Maynard <AMaynard () CLARKU EDU> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2018 18:03:40 +0000 Sophos Central/Cloud for us. We took advantage of their Higher Ed pricing deal. Nice features like DLP, Ransomware protection, Web filtering – MDM optional extra. We haven’t been using it that long so I can’t really tell you how well it does, but it seemed like the best bang for our buck.

Educause Security Discussion mailing list archives Re: [EXTERNAL] [SECURITY] Query: internet browsing logs From: Adam Maynard <AMaynard () CLARKU EDU> Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2018 13:30:35 +0000 We log all URL's visited from on Campus with Palo Alto NGFW. We don't decrypt https, so it just logs the root URL for those. We can trace that traffic back to a user fairly easily. This is pretty helpful for phishing/malware incident response.
9 Conditions That Make Mediocre Relationships More Appealing
Who’s done or said what? Where is communication breaking down? Whose feelings are hurt, and for what reasons? What we don’t often consider are the factors separate from the relationship itself that led us to this moment in the first place. Because there are certain underlying conditions that compel us to seek out (and get stuck in) relationships that are mediocre in some way.
Re: privilege escalation software
You could do it without additional software. If you just want to allow users to install software without giving them admin privs, you could whitelist software with AppLocker with Windows 10. If you just want users to authenticate to elevate, you could create a second set of privileged credentials for your users.

Educause Security Discussion mailing list archives Re: NIST 800-171 Checkup & Lessons Learned From: Adam Maynard <AMaynard () CLARKU EDU> Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2017 15:44:23 +0000 The GLBA for FSA is a requirement for the FY18 audit process. NIST 800-171 is separate from that, but recommended by the DoE. https://ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/Cyber.html NIST 800-171 is for "Controlled Unclassified Information" that comes from the Fed and not already covered by something else, like FISMA.
Re: Blocked URL Categories
Educause Security Discussion mailing list archives Re: Blocked URL Categories From: Adam Maynard <AMaynard () CLARKU EDU> Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2017 17:23:11 +0000 The only URL categories we block are malware, command-and-control, and phishing. Anything else is a grey area of censorship. For instance, I visit hacking websites, not to become a black hat, but to educate myself on hacking TTP. You get into 1st amendment arena if you decide to block others.

Re: Cloud Security Policy
From: Adam Maynard Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2017 21:27:57 +0000 You have to think about what your sanctioned cloud services/apps are, and if you'll tolerate the others. Then how users should be using those sanctioned services/apps. Do you want to allow sensitive data to be stored in the cloud. If yes, should you require encryption. Do you want cloud specific data retention. There's always some type of regulatory influence. You can also consider technical and administrative safeguards, and DLP.
Re: Domain Access Rights
From: Adam Maynard Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2017 21:36:50 +0000 Generally you like to have separation of duties. If you have a small IT shop, that isn't always possible. Start with what access each team member absolutely needs to get their job done as a baseline. When you consider adding access, think about if it's really needed or if another team member can fulfill those tasks to get the job done.
Educause Security Discussion: [SECURITY]
From: Adam Maynard Date: Fri, 10 Feb 2017 13:44:27 +0000 We use Nessus Pro also. I looked into Nessus Manager, Cloud, and Rapid7’s Nexpose. Currently looking into Tenable.io. Tenable’s Security Center is great, I’ve used it before. But it’s terribly expensive. Rapid7’s Nexpose is slightly less expensive than Security Center. I’m just making Nessus Pro work with 3rd party report tools.

You can setup a rule to convert all html URL's into plaintext. This idea got a lot of pushback where I am, but if you're already modifying messages it should be easy. User awareness training is usually the best way to reduce phishing though. Any technical control won't be perfect.
Online Security Awareness Training
Educause Security Discussion mailing list archives Re: Online Security Awareness Training From: Adam Maynard <AMaynard () CLARKU EDU> Date: Tue, 17 Jan 2017 19:57:50 +0000 We're in the final stages of the same thing. SANS is good, unless you want compliance training, that's just videos. Our 3 finalist came down to Knowbe4, Infosec Institute, and Campus Answers (workplace answers). Campus Answers has their training down pat. Infosec has better price and includes phishing simulation.

Maybe something for your network folks? As far as those tty's, idk. You can try 'who -a' or 'last', they might contain IP info.

Questions about your VPN
From: Adam Maynard Date: Tue, 11 Oct 2016 15:18:17 +0000 Do you require two-factor authentication? If you have confidential data, like that required of PCI, HIPAA, etc. 2FA is a must. Who do you allow on your VPN (fac, staff, students, IT)? Staff/IT – yes. Faculty and students on a case-by-case basis. Like, maybe if they’re working on a non-sensitive research project. How many profiles do you have (one for each above, more granular)?
Membership in REN-ISAC
ALL, We're considering applying for REN-ISAC Membership. I've only been in the Higher Ed world for a short time. Some folks above me believe that you need to "give" in order to "receive". Other than more sensitive data being restricted to trusted members, can anyone tell me what obligations are required, or how open the data is to members?
