Part III: Answers to "What Songs Have Helped Get You Through?" « American Songwriter
Friends from all over America and beyond share songs to sustain us through lockdown Times Dylan wrote, “It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there.” A line he might have gotten from Mose Allison, who first wrote, “I’m not downhearted, but I’m getting there.” This is a time of much darkness, and we are downhearted. I think we got there. It’s gotten so dark sometimes it’s hard to see at all. Yet there’s much beauty to be found even these shadowlands.

Adam Schlesinger's Fountains Of Wayne Tour Diary
Throughout the summer, Fountains Of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger will be offering periodic glimpses of life on the road as he and the band tour behind their new album, Traffic And Weather. Hi, it's Adam from the band Fountains Of Wayne. The nice folks at The A.V. Club have asked me to write an occasional few paragraphs describing what our life "on the road" is like. I suggested they just watch the Mötley Crüe Behind The Music and imagine us instead of Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, etc.

Adam Schlesinger - 5 Things I've Learned About Songwriting
I write songs for a lot of different things, and in a lot of different styles. But I loved many genres of music (as do most people), and eventually I realized that I didn’t necessarily have to choose one and eliminate the others. Now one of my favorite parts of the job is switching gears and getting to collaborate with all kinds of different people.

What's the Story?
What should a song be about? It’s a trick question for songwriters, because lots of amazing songs aren’t “about” anything. Or, at least, they’re not about anything that’s obvious or logical. But they sound and feel great, and they engage your imagination, so it doesn’t matter. For better or worse, my songs aren’t usually that abstract. Maybe it’s because I never did enough drugs. But I tend to write songs that are about something pretty specific. A lot of them tell some kind of little made-up story.
