Absolutely! I even worked for my middle school newspaper. Started both as sports editor before becoming managing editor.

I have been pitched more than once by a PR firm repping our direct competitor asking to use them as a resource

The Athletic. I love how they give sports journalists the freedom not to worry about game coverage so they can tell stories.
