Pole dance has provided me with a different relationship to movement. It has given me freedom, joy, confidence, and has empowered me. It’s a space where I can experiment with movement safely, without judgement, and somewhere I can just be me. I am immensely grateful to have found an instructor who has been happy to teach me and learn alongside me in adapting movements that work for my body. I leave the studio sometimes with a sore stomach or face, simply from laughing.

I was surprised to see that the proposal had the support of Autism NZ, an organisation that I would expect to listen to us and represent our voices. Though I am much less surprised that many Autistic adults have already spoken out strongly against it. The voices of Autistic people must always be the priority, and I’m concerned that this decision may have been made without meaningful community consultation or consideration of the broader Autistic community.

I would offer employment to the disability community and to my friends who have a disability. Getting a job can be difficult for people like us. I would have colouring in as an option at the tables and people can put them on the wall if they want to. Customers can ask for a photo with staff and we can have a photo wall. I would make it pet-friendly because some people have dogs with them. For example guide dogs and dogs in general can help when someone is having a meltdown and in emotional distress.
