Municipal solid waste is an often-ignored source of greenhouse gas emissions, air/water pollution, habitat destruction and public health risks. As consumption and the human population continue to grow, the burden of waste grows too. Here in the United States, we have just 5% of the global population yet we create 30% of all waste.

In the United States, a 2021 Pew Research Center survey found that 66 percent of the respondents believe that we need a major or complete overhaul of our economic system.
