1 Introduction In the automotive industry, keeping passengers safe during crashes is crucial, while also focusing on making car bodies lightweight for better fuel efficiency. Engineers make use of both virtual and physical prototypes to confirm that the designed vehicle meets safety standards mandated by authorities. Virtual prototyping plays a key role in reducing the need for physical prototypes, and leads to substantial cost and time savings in the design process.
