AKI due to BKPyV infection affects up to 10% of transplant recipients. BK nephropathy usually develops early post-transplant, often within the first year, and is driven by persistent high-level viral replication in an immunosuppressed environment [39]. The presence of BKPyV in KTRs most often induces UTIs which is the most common cause of AKI in KTRs [40].

1 Introduction Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common kidney disease that occurs as a result of kidney surgery, cardiac surgery, kidney transplantation, and disruption of the renal blood supply (1). During renal ischemia, renal tissues are affected by insufficient oxygen supply and accumulation of metabolites, leading to cellular damage and death.
