At the beginning of any search, it is important to remember that the goal is not merely to appoint someone to the vacant position; it is to appoint someone to the position who will be a successful addition to the team and will thrive in this new opportunity. As such, the process used to identify, select, and integrate the new team member needs to include careful screening, thoughtful recruiting, and well-planned engagement of the community.

The critical need to effectively prepare higher education leaders for the presidency has been surfacing for quite some time. The 2017 American College President Study, conducted by the American Council on Education (ACE), found that 54 percent of presidents or chancellors planned to leave their current positions within the next five years.

As foundation boards seek to align the foundation’s work with the strategic priorities of its related institution, engage in fundraising, provide financial oversight, and diligently steward philanthropic assets, identifying and hiring the right talent to lead and execute the foundation’s activities is vitally important.
