NEW YORK – Researchers from an international bioprospecting project have discovered new viral DNA-binding proteins, one of which could be used to improve loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based diagnostics tests. After scouring geothermal pools in remote Icelandic mountains and Arctic seawater in Norway, the researchers used metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatics methods to find genes encoding recombinase enzymes, which bind to single-stranded DNA.
