To the Editor: Beta-thalassemia intermedia is caused by homo- or compound heterozygosity for beta-thalassemia variants reducing the beta-globin synthesis and encompasses a wide clinical spectrum ranging from non-transfusion dependent hemolytic anemia to occasional blood transfusion dependency. Carriers of beta-thalassemia are usually clinically asymptomatic.
