Texas is expected to play an even bigger role in the White House’s deportation efforts this year, as the state’s largest counties face a December deadline to begin collaborating with federal officials on immigration enforcement. A state law passed in 2025 requires sheriffs in counties with more than 100,000 residents to enter into agreements with the federal government to train local officers under the 287(g) program.

Federal officials track the daily average number of detained immigrants in Texas based on nightly head counts in the dozens of immigration detention centers across the state.

More than one in four detained immigrants in the U.S. were held in Texas as of April 4 — the largest share of any other state in the U.S., according to an analysis by the Houston Chronicle. Federal data released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement shows that about 18,000 immigrants currently in Texas detention centers represent about 27% of the country’s detained population, which is about 66,000.
