Hiking Switzerland’s high alpine trails isn’t exclusive to hardcore hikers. Through a patchwork of eccentric transport systems—tiny cable cars, aging gondolas and remote post buses—writer Ailsa Sheldon takes a ‘lift safari’ through the Swiss mountains. As the cable car creaks into view, my stomach sinks. It looks less like public transport than a garden shed suspended from a wire—the sort of contraption I might have cobbled together as a child from scrap wood and an abandoned stroller.

Europe’s largest wave pool attracts enthusiasts and novices from all over the world. Ailsa Sheldon joins the board meeting at Lost Shore Surf in Ratho, where the surf’s up every day Hailstones bounce off my car windscreen as I drive out of Edinburgh to Ratho. Hailstones in May feels a little cruel for my first surfing lesson but I’m still keen to give it a try. Lost Shore Surf Resort is an inland surf resort and home to Europe’s largest wave pool, powered by innovative ‘Wavegarden’ technology.
