1. Introduction Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) is a metabolizing enzyme encoded by the X-linked gene MAOA. The enzyme is located in the mitochondrial outer membrane and functions to degrade different biogenic amines, including neurotransmitters such as dopamine (DA), serotonin (5HT), and norepinephrine (NE), and regulates the levels of these biogenic amines in extra- and intra-cellular spaces [1].
