What was your first job as a journalist?

An editorial internship with the Forward (www.forward.com) in summer 2002., assisting arts and culture editor Daniel Asa Rose.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Absolutely!

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A pen and pad

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I co-edited a weekly newsletter at my religious high school that was focussed on the Sabbath. I wrote reviews and poetry!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I crisscrossed Europe in 2010 to write an in-depth appreciation of Gustav Mahler for the composer's centennial in The Wall Street Journal.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be passionate about what you cover and, to quote dear old Henry, "Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost!"

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A psychotic press rep once threatened to abduct me so I could cover her client

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

The opera house

I adore Harper's
