On August 20, 2026, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced what he called the toughest sanctions in history against Iran after nearly six months of war failed to produce a decisive military outcome. Iran responded on August 23, warning that continued economic warfare could halt all oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. On August 24, Iran called the campaign “economic terrorism,” while China rejected Washington’s sanctions and promised to protect its interests.

Canada Walks Away From US Trade Talks, and Lessons for India

Canada suspended trade negotiations with the US on August 21, 2026, and recalled its negotiating team after concluding that Washington was offering limited tariff relief in return for concessions that could weaken Canadian manufacturing and restrict its sovereignty. Ottawa said it would impose “dollar-for-dollar” retaliatory tariffs from September 8. The decision ended negotiations that began on February 1, 2025, following the first wave of new US tariffs.

India Eases Rupee Trade Rules, but Wider Adoption Will Need More Work

The government has made it easier for Indian exporters to invoice overseas sales and receive payments in rupees. For countries outside the Asian Clearing Union, export contracts and invoices may now be denominated in any foreign currency or rupees. Export payments may also be received in either. Earlier, export earnings generally had to be received in a freely convertible currency.
