Akaash Maharaj is a Canadian peacemaker, athlete, and conservationist. He serves as Ambassador-at-Large for the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC), and as Head of Policy for Nature Canada. He was leader of the Canadian Equestrian Team and a triple gold medallist in Equestrian Skill-at-Arms.

The sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention on Biological diversity was held from 21 October to 01 November 2024 in Cali, Colombia. Nature Canada participated in COP16, both as a member of Canada’s state delegation at the negotiations, and as a member of the community of citizen environmentalists who gathered in parallel events, to ensure that nature’s voice is heard above the clamour of powerful interests.

Good News on the High Seas!

Often in our work to protect and conserve nature, we have to measure progress in small, incremental steps. Only very occasionally are we able to experience a great leap forward. Canada’s decision to sign the UN High Seas Treaty is one of those leaps. And our voices for nature helped make it possible! This treaty, the UN Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty, is one of the most consequential conservation instruments of all time.
