Nitazenes, a class of highly potent 2-benzylbenzimidazole opioids, have emerged in the illicit drug market, significantly worsening the opioid epidemic. Initially synthesized in the 1950s as novel opioid analgesics, nitazenes were never approved for clinical use due to their excessive pharmacological potency and the risk of severe adverse effects.
