Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Reporting on a queer St. Petersburg artist movement and their struggles with homophobia after the 2012 amendment to the Gay Propaganda Law.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. My late grandfather, a news reporter-turned-local politician, taught me how to use a typewriter.

How is social media changing news?

It invites more transparency as it offers the audience a way to immediately react to reporters and challenge their statements.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

What's your favorite social network?

My family and friends.

Why did you become a journalist?

Very stereotypically, I want to make this world a better place. To me, information and education are agents of change.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Ask for criticism. If you don't get feedback for your work that usually means you've done a good job but you can always refine your craft.

What's your favorite drink?

Campari Orange

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Anywhere but at my desk.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Guardian, The Atlantic

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

We all want to work on a national.
