Optimizing oncology drug development: systematic review of 22 years of myeloma randomized controlled trials Open Access
Multiple myeloma represents a remarkable success in oncology.
Evaluating early intervention in smoldering myeloma clinical trials: a systematic review
Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is a precursor condition to multiple myeloma (MM), occurring in approximately one in 200 individuals over the age of 40.1 SMM carries a highly variable risk of progressing to MM. Historical studies suggested that approximately 50% of patients with SMM would develop MM within 5 years of diagnosis.
Three years of maintenance with VRD in multiple myeloma: results of total therapy IIIB with a 15-year follow-up
Multiple myeloma (MM) outcomes have continually improved over the past 2 decades.1 Overall survival (OS) is improved with lenalidomide maintenance therapy after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).2 Patients with high-risk MM generally experience more aggressive disease behavior and poorer outcomes than those with standard-risk MM, and the addition of a proteasome inhibitor (PI) in the maintenance phase is usually suggested for these patients to overcome these worse outcomes.
Health Disparities Experienced by Hispanic Americans with Multiple Myeloma: A Systematic Review - Clinical Hematology International
Abstract Health disparities in multiple myeloma (MM) disproportionately affect minorities. Characterization of health disparities encountered by Hispanic Americans with MM is necessary to identify gaps and inform future strategies to eliminate them. We performed a systematic review of publications that described health disparities relevant to Hispanic Americans with MM through December 2021.
Ethnic Disparities in AL Amyloidosis Outcomes Among Hospitalized Patients in the United States - Clinical Hematology International
AL amyloidosis is a clonal plasma cell disorder that results from deposition of fragments of immunoglobulin light or heavy chain in tissues [1]. The diagnosis of AL amyloidosis is difficult and can be delayed, due to similarity in clinical presentation with other more common medical conditions. Health disparities are well-established in other plasma cell disorders including multiple myeloma [2].
Dysphagia lusoria presenting as epigastric pain
A 36-year-old African–American woman with medical history of systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis, protein S deficiency and recurrent deep venous thrombosis presented to outpatient clinic complaining of epigastric pain associated with nausea, vomiting and unintentional weight loss. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) was performed; however, mucosal tear was noted following severe retching. Subsequently, the procedure was terminated. EGD was significant for distal oesophageal obstruction.
Ventricular tachycardia after initiation of fingolimod
Fingolimod, a sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor modulator, is used for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. It is well known to cause bradyarrhythmias. We present a 63-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital with sustained monomorphic ventricular tachycardia 2?weeks after fingolimod initiation. Further evaluation showed that the patient’s ventricular tachycardia was most likely secondary to her medication.
Family with clots: antithrombin deficiency
A 44-year-old African-American woman presented to the emergency department with chest pain and shortness of breath of 12?hours prior to presentation. Her medical history includes antithrombin deficiency, recurrent deep venous thrombosis (DVT), recurrent pulmonary emboli, poorly controlled hypertension, diabetes mellitus, asthma, inferior vena cava filter placement, pulmonary hypertension and bipolar disorder.
A rare case of Epstein-Barr virus mucocutaneous ulcer of the colon
Epstein-Barr virus mucocutaneous ulcer (EBVMCU) is a rare form of EBV lymphoproliferative disorder. The disease was recently described in 2010 for the first time in a case series and it was recently identified by the WHO classification of haematological malignancies as a separate category among the EBV lymphoproliferative disorders.
