DARK VOYAGE by Alan Furst Read by George Guidall
Captain Eric DeHaan thinks himself “good as any man, better than none . . . He had big hands, appreciated by women . . . ” Called ashore for a secret meeting, he is asked to throw the tramp freighter NOORDENDAM against the Nazis. And so--like many ordinary men and women in war-torn Europe--DeHann must prove himself to be a coward or an unlikely hero. Many thrillers have nothing to do with life as we know it.
Life in the sun, as it sets on empire
Today I saw Casablanca at the British Film Institute on the South Bank. I’ve seen the film several times before, of course, but I like seeing things on the big screen, I’m a BFI member and it was an appealing way to stay out of the roaring sun for a couple of hours. This isn’t a film review, but it was—predictably—brilliant, all of the performances outstanding (I particularly love Claude Rains as the prefect, Captain Renault) and it’s a much funnier film than I’d remembered.

Book review: 'Under Occupation' offers stunning narrative of life in occupied France

In an effort to maintain an iron grip on the fallen capital, Nazi forces regularly patrol the elegant Parisian neighborhoods, looking for any signs of sedition or sabotage. Maintaining a visible presence through grim, uniformed soldiers, they also use more covert methods, such as wandering throughout the areas dressed as regular civilians.

One of the Men Who ‘Set Europe Ablaze’
An aristocrat La Rochefoucauld certainly was, and looked the way a member of the French nobility ought to look. This is how Kix captured him in later life: “La Rochefoucauld looked debonair. His silver hair had just begun to recede, and he still swept it straight back. At 74, he carried the dignified air of middle age. He had brown eyes that took in the world with an ironic slant … and a Roman ruling-class nose.

When the Fighting Stopped -- For Christmas Carols
In the winter of 1914, with the approach of Christmas Eve, German troops on the battlefields of Flanders began to put small Christmas trees, lit with candles, outside their trenches. Then they sang Christmas carols. First, "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht," then others. Facing them across No Man's Land, British and French troops responded, sometimes with bawdy songs, sometimes with their own Christmas carols.
