Alan has been working in the internet publishing industry since early 1995, when Netscape was the state of the art browser. For the last 19 years he has been running Portal Publishing and leading a team of journalists and technologists who run South Africa's most popular websites for those aged 18 to 29.

How is social media changing news?

For young people particularly there is a lot less allegiance to publications as they are getting more suggestions via social feeds.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means to play the role of an educator for your audience. Bringing relevant & useful information to them, as well as placing it in context.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

These days you have to be flexible and skilled in multiple areas, including photos, videos, images, etc.
