Abstract Genomic prediction (GP) has become an essential tool for accelerating modern plant breeding, particularly for complex traits. We evaluated different GP approaches for pre-breeding in thirteen biparental strawberry families derived from crosses between Fragaria virginiana and Fragaria chiloensis, focusing on resistance to powdery mildew (PM) in both leaves and fruits.

Proposed EU NGT legislation in light of plant genetic variation

Introduction Annex 1 to the European Commission (EC) proposal (2023/0226) on New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) specifies the number and types of changes that would be regarded as equivalent to the variation found in conventional plants, that is those that ‘could have been produced through conventional plant breeding or classical mutagenesis’ (as stated in COM(2023) 411 final). Plants within these bounds are regarded as NGT Category 1 (NGT1).

Waiting for Godot: Europe’s Quest to OK Gene Editing

Two scientists, Vladimir and Estragon, chat every afternoon in the coffee room next to their lab, venting their frustration at the EU’s delay in unfettering gene editing of farm crops. Days and weeks and years fly by; nothing happens. Vladimir exclaims they must act, given the world’s need for drought and disease-tolerant crops. Echoing Beckett’s famous play Waiting for Godot, he shouts, “Let us make the most of it before it is too late!” Vladimir’s cry of despair may finally be heard.
