The distribution and conservation of areas with microendemic species in a biodiversity hotspot: a multi-taxa approach
Mapping AMs shows that the Atlantic Forest is a large and complex biogeographic mosaic, where AMs represent islands or archipelagoes surrounded by transition areas having no microendemic species. In addition, microendemism is ubiquitous across the entire region. As such, our findings indicate a high regional biogeographic heterogeneity not reported previously (Silva, Sousa & Castelletti, 2004; Nogueira et al., 2010; DaSilva, Pinto-da-Rocha & DeSouza, 2015; Silva et al., 2019; Peres et al., 2020).
Phylogeography and population genetic structure of the cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) in the Orinoco basin and Negro River (Amazon basin): evaluating connectivity and historical patterns of diversification
Historical biogeography and diversification patterns In this study, according to mitochondrial and nuclear diversity indices, we found higher values in Orinoco River populations such as Puerto Inírida, Guaviare and Puerto Carreño. This may suggest that the ancestral origin of P. axelrodi is in the Orinoco basin, as reported by Cooke, Chao & Beheregaray (2009), suggesting that Negro River headwater populations had the highest gene diversity values compared to the middle Negro River populations.
A new species of Pristimantis (Anura: Strabomantidae) from white-sand forests of central Amazonia, Brazil
Conclusions Using morphology, bioacoustics and molecular data from three markers (16S, COI and RAG-1), we described a novel species of rain frog (genus Pristimantis) from an unexplored environment in the Amazonia: the white sand ecosystems. Description of Pristimantis campinarana sp. nov. reaffirms that the species richness of the west Amazonian anurans remains considerably underestimated even near to the largest and dynamically developing Amazonian metropole—Manaus.
Phylogeography of sharks and rays: a global review based on life history traits and biogeographic partitions
Shallow coalescence Marine teleosts tend to show very shallow coalescence in haplotype networks, indicating a shared common ancestor on a timescale much shorter than the age of the species (Grant & Bowen, 1998). Furthermore, pelagic teleosts tend to have shallower coalescence than coastal fishes (Graves, 1998). The causes for this phenomenon have been debated in the literature for over 20 years (e.g., Copus et al., 2022).
The DNA barcode reveals cryptic diversity and a new record for the genus Leporinus (Characiformes, Anostomidae) in the hydrographic basins of central northern Brazil
Results The present study focused on 182 sequences of the COI gene of Leporinus, each consisting of 620 base pairs (bps). The phylogenetic trees generated by the ML and BI analyses were highly congruent and well-supported at both the intra- and interspecific levels (Figs. 2–4), except in the case of Leporinus piau, which grouped with either Leporinus cf. friderici or Leporinus venerei.
Scientists’ warning of the impacts of climate change on mountains
Introduction There is increasing concern about Earth’s biophysical systems and sustainability in the light of ongoing anthropogenic climate change (global warming). To this end, world scientists have sent a Warning to Humanity regarding the impacts of climate change on different physical systems and environments (e.g., Ripple et al., 2017; Finlayson et al., 2019; Albert et al., 2021).
Total evidence time-scaled phylogenetic and biogeographic models for the evolution of sea cows (Sirenia, Afrotheria)
Lineage diversity through time Sirenian lineage diversity, quantified at half-million-year increments, is summarized in Fig. 6. As our phylogenetic analysis excludes many fossil species that are unrepresented in the morphological matrices of Furusawa (2004), Benoit et al. (2013), and Vélez-Juarbe & Wood (2018), this time-slice “lineages through time” (LTT) plot should be interpreted as minimum diversity estimates at all temporal samples.
Ecomorphological inferences in early vertebrates: reconstructing Dunkleosteus terrelli (Arthrodira, Placodermi) caudal fin from palaeoecological data
Introduction The fossil record provides a unique and fascinating glimpse into the lives of extinct creatures that once inhabited the Earth. Unfortunately, the palaeobiological information contained in the fossils is, in most cases, rather incomplete owing to different taphonomical processes (Allison & Bottjer, 2011 and references therein).
