Abstract Adult neurogenesis in the subgranular zone (SGZ) has been implicated in cognitive and affective functions. The role of neuroinflammation and reactive microglia in SGZ neurogenesis is not well understood. TGF-β signaling is critical to maintaining microglia homeostasis in the adult brain.

Abstract While TGF-β signaling is essential for microglial function, the cellular source of TGF-β1 ligand and its spatial regulation remains unclear in the adult CNS. Our data supports that microglia but not astrocytes or neurons are the primary producers of TGF-β1 ligands needed for microglial homeostasis.

Abstract The brain's neuroreparative capacity after injuries such as ischemic stroke is contained in the brain's neurogenic niches, primarily the subventricular zone (SVZ), which lies in close contact with the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) produced by the choroid plexus (ChP). Despite the wide range of their proposed functions, the ChP/CSF remain among the most understudied compartments of the central nervous system (CNS).
