1 Introduction The Poisson ratio, symbolized by ν (nu), is an intrinsic characteristic of a material that describes its response to deformation. Typically, when a material is stretched in one direction, it contracts in the perpendicular direction due to its positive Poisson's ratio.

A chamber furnace with a small port hole opening was used for heat treatment to reproduce similar heat treatment conditions as in a conventional roller hearth furnace. A servo-controlled custom specimen-handling apparatus was developed for this work. The apparatus was used to position the specimen to the same position in the furnace for different heating trials, which allows for a repeatable (position and time) thermal cycle to heat-treat the specimens.
